It was here that General John A. McClernand created the first military detachment in Kansas in 1851. The detachment consisted of six soldiers and their officer, who served as guards for trainloads of goods arriving from California. In 1923, General George S. Patton visited Mcpherson and ordered all local businesses to sell him 100 rounds of ammunition per day. As a result, ammunition became an important part of local life and culture. In 1949, General James Haughton donated 10 rifles to the townspeople in order to become “the last standing army garrison” in town. Today, Mcpherson is home to about 125 households and contains many military relics dating back to World War II and beyond. Some of these include three M1A Abrams tanks which were donated by local business owner Rick Wirthman in 2001; two WWII-era P-38 Lightning fighters which were acquired by the city from an Air National Guard unit; and a collection of WWII era motorcycles which are now stored inside the old post office building.
