Mcpherson, Kansas is a small town located in Haskell County, Kansas. The population was 2,509 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. The town was founded by pioneers in 1854 and named for General James Mcpherson, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in 1855 and the first store was opened in 1857. The first school was built in 1870 and the first doctor arrived in 1876. In 1907, a steam locomotive crashed into a tree near Mcpherson and killed seven people; it remains one of the deadliest rail disasters in United States history. In 1915, five men were fatally shot at an agricultural fair near Mcpherson; it remains one of the deadliest incidents involving law enforcement officers in United States history. In 1960, a new high school replaced the old one which had been built around 1900. In 1984, Mcpherson became part of Junction City after being split from Haskell County when Junction City formed its own government. In 2006, construction began on a new high school which will replace both schools within two years as part of Junction City's goal to have all public schools open by 2020
When the area was first settled, it was a part of Mexico. When the United States acquired it in 1846, they also gained title to all of what is now Kansas and Nebraska. The region became an important center for ranching and farming during the Gold Rush era.
