In 1855, James McDermott and his family moved from Massachusetts to Kansas Territory. They were the first white people to settle in what is now Mcpherson County. The McDermotts were early settlers of what is now Mcpherson County and are buried in topographical register at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The area that would become Mcpherson County was long known for its fertile soil and rich cattle pastures. In 1854, James Mcpherson and his brother-in-law, John Voelker, decided to settle in what is now Mcpherson, Kansas. The brothers started a small farm and soon realized that they had made a mistake when they did not take into account the climate of the area. The weather was so cold that the crops failed and life was very difficult. In order to survive, the McPherson family turned to farming animal husbandry in order to produce food for themselves and their animals. This led to the development of an important business activity in Mcpherson: raising livestock. For many years, these activities were the only means by which theMcPhersons managed to provide for their own needs. The first settlersIn Mcpherson were William Fenton and wife Eliza; John Voelker with his wife Anna; James MCPherson with his father-in-law David Haggerty; Charles Quirk with his wives Eliza Jane (Fenton) and Sarah Jane (Quirk). Of these initial arrivals, only Fenton achieved significant success as a farmer because he developed a successful stock business dealing in meat and milk products from his sheep and cattle herds. The other pioneers worked together on various farms until 1871 when each individual received their own land grant for settlement purposes within present day Douglas County. By 1870 there were about 25 people living in what is now Douglas County grazing beef oxen, cows or pigs on communal lands granted them by Ulysses S Grant during Reconstruction Era America’s process of healing following its Civil War victory over Confederate States of America (CSA). From this early group came men such as George Tilton who became one of Douglas County’s prominent lawyers before moving westward into Oklahoma Territory; Jno Ahern who became major general in World War I commanding troops at Anadarko Field Headquarters near Topeka; Orville Nance who settled at Graw Prairie where he founded Nance Petroleum Company; Earle Custer who died young at age 23 during World War I serving as an officer with 7th Cavalry Regiment detachment under General George Armstrong Custer located at Medicine Wheel Indian Reservation east of Rapid City sentiment throughout much of Plains Indian Country favoring semi-nomadic Cheyenne/Arapaho horse herders rather than stationary farmers prevailed against breadwinner type strategies used by European Americans prior thereto
Mcpherson, Kansas was founded in 1867 by George W. Mcpherson and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the nearby hills that contain coal seams. In 1902, the town became a city and has since grown to over 100 residents.
