In 1902, Dutch Bros Coffee moved to what is now known as the Museum of American History building on 5th Avenue in New York City. The second coffee shop to open in Manhattan, Kansas was Dutch Bros Coffee & Cafe located at 604-606 W. 50th Street. This store served Turkish and Arabian coffees as well as roast American beans. The third business to open in Manhattan, Kansas was Java Joes which opened its doors on December 12, 1944 at 421 Lexington Avenue. Java Joes offered a variety of Indonesian and Moroccan coffees along with roasted American beans. In 1960, Harry’s Coffee opened its doors at 7th and Park Avenues in downtown Manhattan with an emphasis on tactical espresso drinks called Harry’s Specialties which included black sesame oil Hendrickson smoothies for $1 per cup or two cups for $2.50 each when purchased together. Manhattan, Kansas was founded in 1854 by the Missouri Compromise. The land for Manhattan was taken from the Shawnee Indians and given to the United States in exchange for a tract of land in Minnesota. The town was named after New York City, which at that time lay on the opposite side of the Great Lakes. In 1861, when Kansas became a state, it included what is now Manhattan. It soon became an important commercial and agricultural center due to its location on the Arkansas River and its access to goods coming downriver from Illinois and Iowa. In 1875, when Wichita Falls were founded nearby, Manhattan began to lose its importance as a shipping point because of increased demand from Wichita Falls for goods brought upriver by steamboats. The town did not go out of business until the late 1800s when automobiles began to be popular and travel between Wichita Falls and other cities became more common. By 1910, however, Manhattan had become a small community with only about 100 residents. In 1935, it was merged into Wichita Falls proper as part of an effort to improve communication between the two towns. Today, Manhattan remains a small community with few residents but plenty of history – thanks in part to its role as one of several communities within Wichita Falls that are preserved as rural Historic Districts administered by the city’s Parks Department. The district includes over 50 buildings dating back to before Kansashood and across 10 different neighborhoods including First Congregational Church (founded in 1846), Mrs Fenton’s Bakery (1892), Elm View Hotel (1910), Dutch Reformed Chapel (1899), Park & Main Streets House (1877), Presbyterian Episcopal Church (founded 1888) and many more!
Manhattan, Kansas was a U.S. territory and paratroopers landing zone during World War II. It was located in the western half of what is now Kansas, east of the Missouri River. The Territory was part of the United States from December 4, 1907 to September 16, 1912 and from November 15, 1916 to May 12, 1917. The area that is now Manhattan was first settled by European explorers in the 18th century as part of present-day Kansas. On February 14, 1861, shortly after the American Civil War ended and when Kansas became a U.S. territory following the Union victory over Confederate forces at Coweta County Fairgrounds on February 14 (the same day Abraham Lincoln declared war on Confederate forces), President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order creating New Mexico Territory and ordering General James Hays to land troops at Manhattan for operations against Native Americans known as " Kiowa ," " Comanche ," and " Apache ." On March 10, 1862 General Hays ordered 1st Lieutenant Augustus Custer to land troops at Manhattan for operations against these tribes; he arrived there on April 2nd with around 100 men under his command but no resources or supplies other than field rations which they had collected while traveling downriver from Wichita Falls through Oklahoma into Texas before finally reaching Manhattan on April 3rd; this event is generally considered to be the start of World War II in mainland America. In addition to its role in connection with World War II activity within mainland America - including actions such as providing airfields for strategic bombing raids over Japan - Manhattan also played an important role in post-war reconstruction efforts in western New Mexico and southwestern Colorado after conflict had been largely pacified by 1945; it remains one of just two U.S.-controlled territories still functioning today (the other being Puerto Rico).
