Small batch coffee is a term used to describe coffee that was made in small batches, typically under three hundredweight. This means the beans were roasted fresh and not processed in a large factory. The early pioneers of small batch coffee were entrepreneurs like Tom McCallister and Gordon Bowker who started their own roasting businesses. These businesses allowed for greater control over the taste and quality of their coffee. As small batch coffee became more popular, it began to be exported to other parts of the world. In Manhattan, Kansas, the trend towards small batch coffee started to take hold in the late 1990s when chef Rick Bayless started his own restaurant called Ronin Grill. At Ronin Grill, Bayless catered to a niche audience of people who lovedartisanal food and drink. Mayor Wolkhardt successfully negotiated passage of a state budget that included $10 million for Wichita State University expansion - one-seventh of which went towards Manhattan; helping it become one of America's most vibrant cities outside New York City or Washington D.C.. In recent years there has been discussion about whether or not to annex neighboring towns such as Garden City into Manhattan proper due to shared streets/ thoroughfares and close proximity to downtown Wichita (though no annexation has yet taken place). There are also plans for a new library complex – currently known as "the new Municipal Tower" – on Broadway Street between 2nd Avenue South and 3rd Avenue North in central Manhattan that will contain more than 20 million books when built; making it America's largest public library ever built outside of Los Angeles or Chicago.

It should also come as no surprise that some of the earliest trademarks associated with small batch coffees were those related to Africa – such as Kaldi Coffee (now known as Blue Bottle Coffee) which began selling its own medium-bodied espresso beans in 1959).
