He founded a small town named Wylie on the east side of present-day Manhattan after purchasing two tracts of land from James Bowie and John Smedley. In 1863, following the American Civil War, Union General George Armstrong Custer moved his cavalry camp to what is now downtown Manhattan on Main Street while he skirmished with Confederate forces near Wichita southwest of town. In 1865, when Sedgwick County was organized into townships by territorial government en masse under Ulysses S. Grant,[1] Townsite No. 8 (later renamed “Manhattan”) was platted at what is now Broadway and First Streets NW in central Manhattan[2][3]. From 1870 until 1907 it served as the seat ofgovernment for all Sedgwick County.[4] After 1907 it reverted to Wyandotte County jurisdiction; however, since Wyandotte has no elected sheriff or judicial officer,[5][6] Manhattan continues to maintain its position as an important community within Sedgwick County government overall despite this lack of authority

Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in western Kansas. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Council Bluffs, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1854 by Englishman John Ladd and his wife Sarah Jane. Ladd named it after his home town of Manhattan, England. In 1867, the town became a part of Topeka and it has remained that way since then. The first post office was opened in Manhattan on July 12, 1868. Most of what is now Manhattan was settled by Scottish Americans who came to Kansas in the early 19th century to work on the railroad. They built churches and schools around what is now downtown Manhattan and along Sakness Avenue (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard). Many of these Scots-Americans are buried in Arlington Cemetery there. In 1907, the city of Topeka annexed most of rural Manhattan to form its new municipal boundaries; however, some residents still retained their independent status until 1955 when they were reincorporated as a part of Topeka under the name "Manhattan." Today's downtown area is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in Topeka andCouncil Bluffs counties with buildings dating back to 1870s! A portion off Broadway east between 11th Street and Broadway reopened as "The Alley" following an extensive restoration project completed in 2009 which included installation new sidewalks and lighting; this restored section also houses several restaurants including Five Barrel BBQ & Brewery etc., making it one block contiguous with Main Street Historic District #2 & 3A
In 1854, Main Street in Manhattan was named after the then-new town of Manhattan. The name originated with a dispute between two families over who would get to name the first street in the new community. The First Dutch family wanted to call it "Nieuw Amsterdam," while the English family wanted to call it "New York." Ultimately, both families agreed on "Manhattan" because it sounded more like an existing building in their town than either of their names.
