Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Manhattan is located at (36.142252, -99.477461). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , all of it land. The town began as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Topeka to Wichita in 1854 and continued services until 1925 when service was discontinued due to low demand. In 1907, Manhattan became an incorporated settlement bylaws and white citizens were elected officials for the first time in history; black residents did not become established until 1960 when they were assigned seats on city councilors through allocation of voting blocs among various districts within Wichita. As a result of this process, black residents represent over 60% of current Manhattan residents while whites make up just 20%. As part of Sedgwick County's easternmost square miles (northern edge), which also includes Garden City and other unincorporated areas eastward into Hutchinson County along Interstate 35W and southward onto Dodge Road/US-30W), much development took place during the early 20th century outside what today would be considered downtown Manhattan; most notably, transportation infrastructure was improved with new access roads built around Dodge Road near present day Union Station (now simply known as "Dodge Rd."). This increased traffic led to enlargement and modernization of downtown Manhattan including completion of two blocks westward from Main Street on First National Bank property in 1915 as well as erection of new streetscapes that include memorials honoring soldiers who served during World War I–1918 and later immigrants who settled in Sedgwick County such as Czechoslovaks who founded Little Bohemia Park in 1922–1925; these developments are now generally recognized as being among Downtown Manhattan's earliestsignificant landmarks. Manhattan, Kansas is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,690 at the 2010 census. Manhattan was founded in 1881 by commissioners of the Santa Fe Railway. It became a city in 1907 and was named for New York City. In 1916, it merged with Topeka to form the new city of Topeka and Manhattan reverted to its original name. The population of Topeka increased from 10,000 to 30,000 during the postwar era as waves of people moved into the area from adjacent states such as Oklahoma and Iowa. After Topeka's incorporation as an independent city in 1959, Manhattan declined and lost most of its population over the next few decades; however, it has since regained some popularity as a tourist destination for its historical buildings and attractions.
