Manhattan, Kansas is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Kansas. It was founded in 1854 by men from Manhattan, New York City. The town has a population of about 2,000 people today. The first settlers in Manhattan were men who had come overland from New York City. They built a log cabin and started to farm the land. In 1855, the town was organized as a county seat by order of the US Congress. The first postmaster was John Kapp and the first justice of the peace was James Denny. In 1907, the town developed an oil refinery and gas station on its east side to serveoil producers in nearby Wichita Falls. The refinery closed in 1969 but left behind significant evidence of its existence including a large concrete landing pad that remained until recently when it was dynamited to prevent vandalism. In 1929, Manhattan voted to become an incorporated city under the name Wichita Falls Municipal Corporation with a population of just over 500 residents. However, this decision failed to gain support from other towns within Wichita Falls Municipal Corporation and it eventually disbanded in 1970 with all its constituent parts becoming villages again: Park Hills (1929-1970), Elmhurst (1970-present), Midtown (1971-present), and Hutchinson (1997-present). Today, Manhattan is still home to some 2,000 people who call it their home; however most live outside of town limits either working or living close by their homes while enjoying local agriculture or fishing opportunities available on distant reservoirs like Tower County Lake or Holland Prairie Reservoir which are also popular tourist destinations for those interested in hiking or hunting moose or deer than visiting art galleries or shopping malls

Manhattan, Kansas is a town in Geary County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Manhattan was James A. Mason in 1859. He and his wife were the first white people to reside in what is now Geary County after leaving Dodge City, Kansas. James A. Mason operated a gristmill and store near present-day Manhattan until his death in 1861. His widow continued operations until her death in 1893; she was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Manhattan. In 1875, John Wirth founded Hutchinsonville on the east side of Manhattan Creek about northeast of today's town center. Hutchinsonville became an important transportation hub on the Santa Fe Trail because it had a ferry service from Hutchinson to Topeka and from Topeka to Wichita (via Manhattan). In 1886, Harry Bemis built a frame jail located southeast of present-day town center for use by deputies of the United States marshal office during law enforcement operations in Hardin County and Pawnee County outside Wichita. In 1907, David J Smith purchased 3 ranches that comprised much of what is now Geary County from Simeon Dickinson Sr., one of the early settlers thereabouts; these tracts became known as "Smith Ranch". From 1916 to 1919 he served as Mayor of Manhattan (a post he held concurrent with that of Town Clerk). In 1918 he also ran for Congress as a Republican but did not win election due to redistricting withinKansas which changed many congressional districts along racial lines including Manhattan's borders approximately tenuously into those currently within Geary County.. Accordingly when Ethel M Truman married Harry Truman on December 10th 1952 they moved into their daughter Kimball Truman's home on Newberry Road just east of downtown Wichita Falls KS before moving into their own home on Independence Avenue NW across from Washington Elementary School several years later where they live still today

In 1907, a group of businessmen named John Wacker bought what is now known as Wacker's Army Barracks on Amsterdam Avenue. This location served as a headquarters for much of the military during World War I. In 1957, Manhattan became an incorporated city when its citizens voted to make it their official municipality. The population of Manhattan has grown steadily over the years, reaching 1,500 residents in 2001. Today, much of Downtown Manhattan remains vibrant and active despite being partially obscured by tall buildings that line both sides of First Street between Park Avenue and 50th Street.
