The Manhattan, Kansas Army National Guard was established on February 14th, 1907. The unit was originally known as the “ Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment” and served in the Spanish-American War. After the war, the regiment was re-designated as the “Kansas National Guard Infantry Battalion #2” on July 1st, 1912. On November 16th, 1916, the battalion became a regiment and again changed its name to the “Manhattan (Kansas) Army National Guard Infantry Battalion #1” on January 1st of 1917. The battalion saw combat during World War I and fought in France and Belgium. In 1919, after World War I ended, the battalion became an infantry division and then a brigade before being redesignated as an army corps units in 1942. Finally, on September 10th of 1945, it become an army divisional unit and reverted back to its original name of “Manhattan (Kansas) Army National Guard Infantry Battalion #1” once again. Today, the Brigade Combat Team 2nd Provisional/Infantry is headquartered at Fort Riley in Topeka while also having detachments located at Wichita Falls Military Academy; Grand Island Armory; Logansport; Geary Barracks; Garden City; Emporia; Wichita Falls Military District Headquarters;; Alva Air Force Base;; Raton Armories;; Ft Sill; Ft Worth Proving Ground;; Aberdeen Proving Ground;; etc… These battalions are responsible for providing support to U.S. Army installations worldwide under various operational commands including: XVIII Airborne Corps (Air Assault), III Corps (Army); XXI Corps (Army Reserve), XVI Corps (Army Service Forces), II Defense Command - Kuwait Garrison Force Special Purpose Unit

Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in the Great Plains region of Kansas. The population was 546 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The Town of Manhattan was organized on October 9, 1854, by commissioners from Leavenworth and other towns in that area. The first post office was established in Manhattan on November 1, 1854. The name "Manhattan" is derived from the French word "manutention", meaning "ledgers and accounts." In 1865, a school for boys was built in what is now downtown Manhattan; it served as the town's only educational facility until 1907. In 1870, construction began on a new courthouse which remains standing to this day. On December 17, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant dedicated the new courthouse and park with a speech commemorating America's victory over Mexico at San Juan Hill two years earlier. The town became an official US territory on February 14th, 1912 when it joined the US under the provisions of Annexation Act of 1912. As part of its incorporation into the United States, Manhattan required all male citizens to present their citizen card or passport to obtain municipal services - something which still applies today! As part of its growth rate during World War II (WWII), Manhattan experienced rapid population growth which caused some social problems such as overcrowding within homes and businesses in pre-war days; however these have since been largely resolved through development andHousing Authority policies initiated by Mayor Emanuel since his appointment in 2013 !!

In 1855, Manhattan was the site of a small town called Cedar Rapids. The town was founded by pioneers who crossed the Kansas state line on horseback in 1854. In 1861, when the American Civil War began, Cedar Rapids became part of Union City. On November 25, 1865, Union City was destroyed by a tornado that caused $2 million in damage. In 1870, Manhattan and Cedar Rapids were combined to form one Village. On May 1, 1880, the Village was renamed Manhattan after President James K. Polk awarded it to Kansas for its bravery in during the Spanish-American War. On January 24, 1907, New York Statehood was granted to Kansas and Manhattan became part of the new state. The following year, on February 14th,[1] Manhattan was officially designated as the capital of Kansas under Act No. 9 of 1907.[2] The city has experienced significant growth over its history; it now has over 100 thousand residents.[3] In recent years, Broadway and downtown have seen a proliferation of high-end restaurants and bars while also becoming an increasingly popular spot for nightlife.[4]
