The Marine Corps has been deployed in support of our country for more than a century. The Marines are an essential part of our military and offer the public an appreciation for their service. Each deployment provides opportunities to display the Marines' personal courage, dedication and strength. In Liberal, Kansas, members of the Marine Corps gave back to their community by providing gifts to local children during Operation Christmas Tree 2015. This event was a major fundraiser for the Liberal-based Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber supports manylocal charities and this year'sOperation Christmas Tree was no exception. The Chamber's volunteers collected money that would go to local children in need through several fundraisers throughout the month of December. In addition, each individual participant contributed a gift which distributed evenly among all participating agencies. This was not only a great way for individuals to give back but also demonstrated how much fun it is for everyone when you work together as a chamber!

This year, the Marine Corps will celebrate its tenth anniversary of deploying through the Deployment Command’s (DCD) Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Honoring Our Best program. The MEU Honoring Our Best program began in 2003 as a way to show appreciation to Marines who have served our country deployments in harm’s way. Since then, the program has grown into something much larger; it allows Marines from all branches of service to come together and share special memories with their families while they are deployed. It is an opportunity for them to connect with each other on a personal level, as well as learn new things about their military brethren who are away at war. This year, CDD is excited to honor these Special Forces soldiers by sending them festive gifts that reflect their individual personalities and values. Each MEU member will receive a unique gift that reflects his or her unique skillset and experiences. These gifts will help commemorate the special moments between friends and family members during deployment, as well as enhance morale within theMEU community. This year's celebrated event begins on Friday, November 15th with a day-long gathering of MEU members at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina where they will be able to preview some of the items being sent home by unit commanders across the Marine Corps War College website www.mcwcpublishingdivision.com/. They were looking for new land to develop and they found it in the area that is now Liberal, Kansas. The first people who settled in this area were the Kansan pioneers. They were farmers who started growing crops and raising livestock. In 1854, a group of settlers named Ladd moved from Missouri to start a new life in what is now Liberal, Kansas. They were pioneer farmers who had faith that the land would be good for farming. Over time, other groups of settlers started moving into Liberal from all over America. Some of these settlers brought their own families with them and some took on board passengers on their ships arriving at Mission Landing on the Missouri River. These sailors would disembark and help set up shop among the other immigrants as they started building their homes and businesses.
