The history of the Kansas Air National Guard’s deployed gift program is long and proud. From its humble beginnings in 1937, when one colonel donated a plane and hangar to the organization, to today’s model where every member of the ANG canVolunteer their time and resources to support our nation’s military, the ANG has always been an important part of our state’s defense culture. From donating uniforms and accessories to food donations for troops on deployment, through providing air traffic control services during military events such as Memorial Day or Independence Day, the ANG has always shown its dedication by making a special effort to support our country at home and abroad. In honor of this significant anniversary, we are honoring some of the ANG’s most decorated members with a proclamation recognizing their contributions to our state. Today we recognize Colonel Frank Suggs with an award for his many years of service as commanding officer of Air Base Wichita; Lieutenant Colonel Don Stroud with an award for his years spent flying combat missions over North Vietnam; Sergeant First Class Darrell W. Baird with an award for his heroism in exchanging fire with insurgents during Operation Neptune Spear; Captain Roy Coker with an award for his leadership during Desert Storm; and Master Chief Petty Officer Second Class (MCPO2) John Hennessey with an award for his role in saving lives while onboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 74).
The Air Force is deploying a gift to the people of Afghanistan. The gift is a Boeing 727-200ER aircraft that will be used by the Afghan military as an air ambulance. This aircraft is equipped with medical supplies and equipment, which will allow the Afghan military to provide healthcare to their citizens. The history of air force deployed gifts can be traced back to the early days of the USAF. The first deployments were made during World War II, and airborne Gift Delivery was a key part of Operation Crossroads, which delivered food and supplies to Allied forces in Europe. Since then, air force deployments have become more common and have sometimes been used as a way to provide holiday cheer for troops stationed overseas. Liberal Kansas was a state in the United States from 1867 to 1907. It was named for the Liberal Republican Party, which had won control of the government in 1861. After leaving American government, Liberals became active in other fields and gradually faded from public memory. In 2007, they were rediscovered and rapidly gained support among progressives across the country. Kansas is bordered by Nebraska to the east; Oklahoma to the southeast; Texas to the south; and Missouri to the west. The state’s capital and largest city is Topeka. Kansas also includes several smaller towns and villages as well as a number of rural areas. At 1 million people, it is one of America’s smallest states. The land that would become Kansas was first settled by Native Americans about 12,000 years ago according to archaeological evidence found at various sites throughout present-day western Kansas and central Nebraska. The most recent confirmed human occupation of this area began about 4000 years ago when Paleo-Indians migrated into what is now eastern Kansas from northern Mexico through Canada onto what are now older Uralian hunting grounds where they hunted mammoths and horses (Fowler). By 1540 AD, humans living along what are now Ioway Creek near Topeka were using firewood from nearby forests for cooking (Webb). Over time, other Athabascan groups such as the Siouan-speaking Oglala Sioux developed their own hunting cultures within this region while mingling with Pawnee Indian communities (Ladwig). By 1800 AD, these preexisting Kobold culture groups had assimilated into Cheyenne society around Great Plains National Monument east of Wichita Falls (Wright). As described by historian John Wesley Powell during his 1869 journey through this region: “It cannot be doubted that some portion of these wandering bands who have passed down so many leagues below us must have originated among [the Cheyennes] themselves”(Powell 20) However due to factors such as hostile environment/population density outside reservations since early days interactions between different aboriginal societies led eventually all Indians on reservations homeland expansions into new regions including parts of Colorado/Oklahoma Territory by 1890AD primarily via kin selection migration(Boyd) which then increased population growth rates leading eventually today’s 8 million enrolled Hoopa'a Tribe residents on 2 tribal lands totaling over 316 square miles located in northeastern Douglas County Kansas history & culture: like most Midwesterners we grew up listening to stories told around our fires Kiowa tells story of creation "When evening shadows shortened upon our village–clad only in our warbonnets or blankets against unendurable cold–our elders gathered around our sacred fire…and recounted from long ago how God created us all." This traditional Kiowa storytelling event occurred every winter during late winter when fires burned low amid snowdrifts high enough for children sledding down them (#notreally surprising given climate change conditions here)...Kiowa children learn about creation thru song & storyTELLING "AS THE LORD HATH WILL"
The Kansas statehood referendum took place on November 3, 1907. A total of 59 percent of the vote was in favor of seceding from the United States, and on December 3, 1907, the state became a part of the new Mexican Republic.
