Lenexa, Kansas is a town in Clay County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,453 at the 2010 census. The Lenexa railroad station is located in the town. The community of Lenexa developed on the banks of the Republican River near present-day Lenexa Boulevard and I-435. When railroads reached this area in 1881, they began to build lines through Clay County, creating new towns along the way. One such railway line became the Lenexa and Shawnee Railroad. In 1889, construction began on what would become known as the "Lenexa Road" – a road that ran from I-435 east to downtown Lenexa. This road helped create a commercial center in which businesses could flourish and attracted immigrants who needed work opportunities but also created demand for goods and services available in downtown LenEXA. As downtown grew more popular with residents and businesses, so did tension between residents and developers over control of key aspects of their community – such as zoning laws that allowed for only single-family homes to be built within .5 miles (8 kilometers) of any business or school. This conflict led to violence and vandalism by both groups during the early 21st century). One solution proposed by city leaders during this time was for developers to build apartments above businesses in order to provide affordable housing for residents who couldn't afford traditional home ownership. However,this plan met opposition from many veterans who felt that their homes were essential part of their military service and wanted them preserved as memories instead of being turned into condos or apartment blocks; this issue would continue to dog Lenexa until at least 2020 when a unanimous vote by City Council approved Resolution 6041 calling for all homes built after 1994 without exception be considered historical landmarks rather than rental units

Lenexa was founded in 1854 and named for General James Lenox, an American soldier who fought in the Mexican-American War. Lenexa was incorporated as a city on March 24, 1907. The original building that now houses the City Hall were built in 1906 by J.E. McClain and are still used today as a municipal building. On July 16, 1912, Mayor A W McCoy proposed that the name of the city be changed to "Lenexa" after his home state of Illinois which he had visited while living there and then returned to Kansas as part of his gubernatorial campaign There have been several other proposals to rename or change its name throughout its history but all have been rejected by either the City Council or Republic Administration due to their political nature or lack of support from grassroots citizens like McCoy himself who felt that Lenexa should remain known simply as "Lenexa".
