Lenexa, Kansas is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 901 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–ia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Lenexa Gateway Mall is located in Lenexa. Lenexa was founded in 1887 by three brothers who had come from Illinois to homestead land east of the Saline River. They named their town after their father, Lewis Cass (1827-1900), a senator from Michigan and one of the founders of the United States. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1907 it had a population of 1,500 people. A post office was opened in Lenexa on July 16, 1907, and for many years it served as the main center for mail services in Sedgwick County. During World War II much important industry took place within Lenexa limits: shipbuilding on riverboats and at local lakes; aircraft manufacturing at nearby Wichita State University; uranium mining on several properties near the community; and paper manufacturing on abandoned Holston Valley Railroad tracks west of town. After the war ended most production stopped but some small businesses continued until they too closed down during subsequent economic downturns throughout much of America during that decade. In 1990 Lenexa experienced its first major fire when an oil refinery caught fire just north of town on Ada Road near Interstate 30A. That event helped spur redevelopment around downtown which included new shopping malls, restaurants, offices and other development along First Street NW between Meridian Avenue SW and Interstate 70E/US 36W (now called I-70E/US 36W North). In recent years there has been renewed interest in downtown redevelopment with plans to add more than 100 residential units as well as large retail stores including Macy's department store which will anchor what will be known as "The Village". The goal is to have all these developments done before 2020 when Sedgwick County voters are set to decide whether or not to extend cityhood status to LenEXA through referendum ballot question posed annually since 2005.

Lenexa, Kansas is a small town in the Midwestern United States. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lenexa was founded on November 16, 1854 by James Lenexa and his wife Sophronia Beardsley. James Lenexa had come to this area from Shawnee County, Kansas in 1849. His first store and post office were located near present-day Market Street and Third Avenue. In 1865, the community became incorporated as a city under the name of Topeka. A fire destroyed much of downtown Topeka in 1906, but Lenexa remained primarily a rural community until after World War II when it began to grow with heavy industry coming to town for defense work during World War II. The population peaked at 1,405 in 1950 before slowly shrinking over the next several decades as manufacturing left for other countries or went out of business outright. Today, Lenexa has a population of 694 and is considered one of the most culturally diverse small towns in America due to its many connections to numerous cultures around the world including Japanese culture (through The Japan Foundation), Mexican culture (through Our Lady's School), Caribbean culture (through St John's Parish) and African American culture (through various churches). The history of Lenexa can be traced back to 1854 when James Lenexa came from Shawnee County, Kansas Territory where he had been born on November 16th that year according to his certificate of naturalization papers filed with the U.S Patent Office on January 25th of that year which listed his place of birth as "Lenexa". He arrived here with his family consisting only himself and two daughters Sophia and Aline who were six years old at that time; all three children would eventually grow up into adults in this small town located about twenty miles west northeast of Wichita Falls along present day US Highway 20 eastbound towards Council Grove Heights before turning south onto US Highway 169 which led east towards Guthrie Center just past present day Harper Road/US Highway 169 junction where they would continue their journey home each night using Indian Trails which ran between these two locations until they reached home each morning following an 8-mile trek through wooded areas inhabited by both white settlers & Native Americans prior to reaching their homes near today's Market Street corner & Third Avenue intersection - almost exactly one mile walk away from what was then known as "LenEXA" - today's downtown Topeka
Lenexa, Kansas was founded in 1873 as the town of Lenexa. It was renamed to Lenexa in 1907 and again to its current name in 1959. The city was formed from a merger of two towns, Guthrie and Lenexa, on November 3, 1961.
