Lenexa, Kansas is a small town located in the southern U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The Lenexa Municipal Airport serves as its only airport. Lenexa is also home to Hometown High School, which has been featured on national television and in magazines such as "The New York Times". Lenexa was founded by pioneers Daniel Witherspoon and David Cook in 1868 when they began trading supplies with the nearby Wichita Indian Nation for goods and knowledge about their land. Their first store opened in 1870 on the present site of the city hall building (now City Hall Annex). This location served until 1876 when a new store was built on Prairie Avenue west of Main Street, serving residents of all rural areas within easy driving distance of Lenexa. In 1904, when Wichita annexed most of Shawnee County, Lenexa became part of that county; however, it reverted to Shawnee County status once Wichita again annexed most of Shawnee County in 1907-1908. During World War II, local businesses supported military personnel by providing food and munitions while they were away from home; this resulted in a boom period for Lenexa during that time frame. After the war ended and many soldiers returned to civilian life, business slowed down but never went away completely; it revived somewhat during the late 1970s through early 1980s before slowly dying out during the 1990s recession. Today much like then-recently departed downtown Wichitaombudsville (Kansas City), Lenexa’s economy relies heavily on agriculture although there are some light industrial sectors including printing and paper products manufacturing as well as real estate services which have seen recent growth due to investors coming into town looking for opportunities near major highways (I-435/I-635)
