Lenexa, Kansas is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Sedgwick County and home to Lenexa High School. The area that now Lenexa was part of Shawnee Indian Territory and was under the jurisdiction of Topeka. A post office called Lenexa was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1903, Shawnee Nation ceded all their land east of the Missouri River to the United States Government as part of the Treaty of Denver. This cession left Lenexa completely within Sedgwick County; however, its position as county seat made it one of America's oldest continuously populated cities. Lenexa's early history can be found through oral histories and historical records from both local residents and government officials. One such record is an interview with Major John Smeaton conducted by J.B. Morton in 1865 at Fort Hays during negotiations for removal from Shawnee Indian Territory to Nebraska Territory (now Oklahoma). Lenexa was founded in 1867 as a small town on the banks of the Kansas River. The town quickly grew and by 1890 had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1916, Lenexa became the county seat of Shawnee County. The growth of the city led to the annexation of adjoining towns in 1921. By 1930, Lenexa had reached its present size with a population of over 10,000 people. Lenexa is located at 36°59′N 95°27′W / 36.983 N 95.468 W and has an elevation of 579 feet (174 meters). The city is surrounded by rural areas which make up much of its history and culture. One significant event that took place in Lenexa's history was when it was accepted as the new county seat for Shawnee County after it was vacated by Topeka. The early settlers who arrived in what is now Lenexa were farmers and their families who came from central Kansas during the late 19th century to establish new homes and farms along the Missouri River corridor that would become known as Kansas City Territory. In 1867, seven men from Franklin County – James Hogg, John Purdy, William Weigel, Charles Fenton, Ebenezer Higgins, Moses Carpenter and George Meeker – organized a wagon train to travel westward across country to find land opportunity on the other side of the river. They arrived at what is now Lenexa on October 15th and set up shop around what is now First Street near where today’s Main Street meets Interstate 435 (then called Dodge City Road). On December 3rd they filed their plat with Secretary Of State John Denny based on surveys made back then only covering one-half mile wide swath extending north from east bank of river “to provide room for future developments” according to later reports but no buildings or structures were built until many years later when streets were laid out includingMain Street which still retains its original name today because it wasn’t possible back then for two main roads intersecting at such an angle! 40 years ago today!
