Lenexa, Kansas is home to the Kansas Air National Guard's 8th Airlift Wing. In 1969, the wing was activated as a result of the Space Race between the United States and Russia. The wing currently flies C-130 Hercules aircraft. In 1984, the wing was inactivated and its assets were transferred to the 4th Airlift Wing at Wichita International Airport. The 8th Airlift Wing reactivated in 2009 as a result of Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) deployment of U-2s from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. The wing flew missions supporting SDI operations until 2013 when it was moved back to Lenexa after being stationed at RAF Molesworth in England for thirteen years.

The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and bitterly fought history with gift giving. The USAF was founded in 1947 as the USAF Reserve Command, later renamed the USAF. From its creation until well into the 21st century, RAF personnel have been overwhelmingly generous with their time and money to support their air force brethren around the world. One of the most famous gifts given by an RAF officer or member of his unit is said to be a Spitfire Mk IX aircraft mk 54 flown by Lt Col John "Johnny" Steele from No 8 Squadron RAAF in Malta during WWII. This Spitfire was gifted to Britain in 1945 as a war reparation in memory of Flight Lieutenant H.C. Stephenson (No 7331). The aircraft had been donated by Major-General Geoffrey Keyes CBE, Director-General of Air Material at RAF Bentley Priory near Oxford on 10th October 1944 following damage caused when it crashed whilst operating over France on 9th September 1943 killing six crewmen and one groundcrew member. There are countless other examples where RAF officers or members have generously donated their time and/or equipment to support their air force brethren all over the world - some even more than 50 years after they were originally gifted!

The town also has a strong military presence with several military installations including Fort Riley and Fort Hays State University.
