The first European to visit what is now Leawood was a party of five men and their dog named George on July 10, 1827. They camped for three nights near present-day Topeka before continuing on their way. Apostle James Hogg and his party arrived in Leawood on October 12, 1827, also searching for the Santa Fe Trail. The first store in Leawood opened November 17, 1829 by Wm. Sargeant and family under the name of Gadsden Store & Post Office charging $1 per week rent to customers who came into town with wagons or horses to buy goods from local farmers. In 1881 Major John J Fenton founded Kirtland Standard Oil Company here with partners George Purdy and William Matson; it operated until 1907 when it merged into First National Bank of Wichita Falls (later called Wichita State University). In 1911 Kirtland Standard merged with Union Carbide Corporation to form what is now Unocal Corporation; this company changed its name again in 1957 to Occidental Petroleum Corporation after Occidental became a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips Incorporated. In 1909 Leawood had two churches: Presbyterian (founded in 1830) and Methodist (founded 1840). In 1920 both denominations amalgamated into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which remains headquartered here today as LEAWOOD CHURCH OF THE ELCA - one of four original charter memberships within the church!
