The history of the United States Air Force and its gift to Leawood, Kansas begins with a letter from Benjamin Franklin in 1784. Franklin wrote to the governor of Pennsylvania, asking for permission to establish a military post in that state. The post was granted and the first American soldier stationed in Philadelphia died at Fort Leavenworth on February 14, 1785. In 1909, General James F. Robinson became Commanding Officer of VIII Bomber Command and determined that an airbase be established in Wichita, Kansas so bombers could be used against Germany during World War I. On December 20, 1918, Robinson declared Leawood airfield open to the USAAF and it became one of America's largest bomber bases. From here bombers flew strategic missions over Europe during World War II carrying out operations such as bombing raids on Hamburg and Dresden. After the war ended there were continuing concerns about potential enemies having access to American airspace so on July 26th 1950 President Harry S Truman announced Operation Crossroads which aimed to prevent further proliferation of nuclear weapons by acquiring Soviet Tu-8 aircraft carriers (the world's first nuclear-powered carrier). Fourteen days later Operation Flaming Dart followed with thirty Soviet Tu-10s being acquired from Leningrad Shipyards near Saint Petersburg. With these planes USAF Strategic Bomber Command was able to carry out attacks on Japanese targets throughout Asia Minor including Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Leawood is a city in southern Kansas, United States. The population was 27,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Leawood County. The city is located in Wichita County. The first permanent settler in what later became Leawood was John Smeaton in 1857. He named his land for his friend and fellow British subject, Elijah Leach. The town site was surveyed by James Wickersham in October 1859 and plat on November 2, 1860. A post office called "Leawood" was established in 1867, and remained open until 1907. Most of the present-day city was built between 1907 and 1912 by developers who came to the area from Wichita and Topeka counties along the Arkansas River floodplain. In 1902, an act of Congress created Wichita County; within it were Leawood Township (now part of Lawrence), Walnut Creek Township (later part of Hutchinson), Dodge City Township (now part of Atchison), Overland Park Township (now part of Shawnee Mission Hills), and Garden City Township (now part of Topeka). On July 1, 1907, much of eastern Lawrence County rose into private ownership following passage of the federal Landowners' Grant Act; this left most pre-1907 townships with their original landowners including Leawood as one example On February 15, 1912 an act providing for creation and organization of Kansas's new metropolitan areas passed both houses with no opposition; Wichita Metropolitan District became effective on April 1st Leawwood annexed portions of two neighboring cities: Topeka on January 12th, 1913 while Topeka still had its own mayoralty; Hastings annexation followed on March 5th . In 1915 a fire destroyed most or all downtown businesses but did not damage homes which again allowed development to continue without fear for loss
The United States Air Force is one of the most important military services in the world. It has an active duty force of over 124,000 people, including 6600 civilian personnel and 10700 reserve members. The USAF is also one of the largest member organizations of the International Organizations. The USAF traces its origins to World War I when it was established as a component of the American Expeditionary Forces. In 1954, it became an independent service and adopted its current name, the United States Air Force. The USAF has a rich history that goes back to World War I. On December 8, 1917, America declared war on Germany and entered into a conflict that would last for over six years. Over 1 million men served in World War I, many becoming veterans who later contributed their skills to serve in other branches of our military or return home after hostilities ended. Out of those Service members who returned home after hostilities stopped on November 11th 1918- two thirds had died within five months from battle- exhaustion or disease being amongst the main causes. In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson called for a peacetime Army with 50% women soldiers and four year training times for enlisted men instead of two years like before which was only possible through volunteerism by individual soldiers manning their own units without pay or benefits at all though some officers were given commissions as “Volunteers” because they could not find anyplace else to go in society during these difficult times! A bill was passed making this change permanent but due to high financial costs it never happened as more and more volunteers joined up until 1914 when compulsory enlistment began!!! Here we go again………world war 2!!!!!!!!! The USAF gift history begins with the founding of the United States Air Force in 1947. The USAF was created as a result of President Harry Truman's Executive Order 9265 on December 12, 1947. The order established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to provide for "the development and application of aeronautical science and technology for national defense." The USAF's first commander-in-chief, General Curtis LeMay, issued an executive order expanding the organization's mission to include strategic bombing. In 1952, General Hoyt S. Vandenberg assumed command of the USAF, which led to significant changes in how air warfare was conducted. In addition to his civilian responsibilities as Administrator of NASA, Vandenberg also served as Commander in Chief of the USAF from 1951-1957. During this time he directed Operation Mongoose which aimed to reduce North Korea's nuclear capabilities throughair raids. Additionally, Vandenberg developed plans for Operation Ploughshare which would lead to Cuba becoming a member country of NATO in 1961. General Hoyt Sverdlov became Commanding General Air Forces Europe (CAGFE) on June 1, 1957 and served until his retirement on October 15, 1972. During his tenure at CAGFE he increased RAF fighter strength by 50%. He is considered one of the architects of NATO since its creation in 1949 and played a major role in developing air strategy during both world wars II and III
Leawood is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,453 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Leawood was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 6, 1804, as Fort Laramie. It was named for Colonel John A. Leawood, an officer on the expedition who had been killed near present-day Topeka several days earlier. The city was incorporated in 1907. The first settler in what would become Leawood was James Sibley in 1836. He built a cabin on land that would later be annexed to the city and named it Sibley Center after himself and his brother Isaac Sibley Jr., also a pioneer in what became Leawood. In 1839, Methodist missionaries arrived in Kansas Territory and set up camp near present-day Leawwood on the east side of Clear Creek River where they began preaching to Native Americans and teaching them Christianity. In 1840, Samuel Wilkinson purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land northwest of present-day Leawood from Alexander McKay for $3 per acre ($100/km²). This area would later become known as Wilkinson Park because it lay within its boundaries when he bought it. In1846, Missouri settlers arrived in Kansas Territory and established Camp Robinson about 12 miles (19 km) southeast ofpresent dayLeawOOD on knolls overlooking Clear Creek River which served as their winter quarters until April 12th when they abandoned their base due to bad weather conditions led by widespread ice storms across much of eastern North America at that time due to extreme cold described by some historians as “the single most severe natural disaster ever experienced along the Great Lakes” Kansas Territorial Governor James Peculiar designated June 15th as Pioneer Day to celebrate these new settlers’ arrival and contribute materially to development westward throughout this territory On October 22nd 1861 Lawrence Jealous donated 1/4 mile (0.6 km²) north of today’s cornerof Main Street between Elmhurst Road (now US Highway 281) and East Central Avenue east of Depot Road to make room for a public school while Post #1 continued functioning at home with Mrs Hargrave teaching 8th grade girls there until moved out during World War IIdue primarily to high tuition rates at nearby Wichita State University The first post office opened at LeewOOD on May 25th 1865 under name Westport It remained open until 1911 when it changed its name back to Lawrenceville On November 30th 1912 Fenton Waddell donated 3 lots totaling 24 acres (10 ha) northeast cornerof Main Street between Elmhurst Road (now US Highway 281)and East Central Avenue east of DepotRoad forming part of what is now First National Bank Square .
