Leavenworth is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sedgwick County. Leavenworth was founded in 1855 and named for George Leavenworth, a Union general during the American Civil War. Leavenworth is located on the U.S.-Mexico border about 12 miles (19 km) north of Dodge City and 20 miles (32 km) south of Topeka. It lies within Kanawha County on both sides of the Missouri River and has a total area of . The first permanent settler in what would become Leavenworth was John Forbes who arrived in 1855. He named his new settlement after General George Leavenworth because he believed that this would encourage other Union soldiers to come to Kansas Territory for military service against Mexico. The town reached its peak growth between 1870 and 1880 when it had an population of 3,000 people. However, by 1890 it had shrunk to just 100 people due to competition from nearby Topeka and Wichita! In 1907, there were only four residents left in Leavenworth when oil discoveries were made near Hutchinson Lake in neighboring Kanawha County. In order to capitalize on these new opportunities, businesses started up throughout downtown including a millinery shop, grocery store, post office and bank; all soon becoming world-renowned thanks to the natural gas discovered beneath the surface! From 1920 until 2002 Levenworth experienced rapid growth as Repealtown USA - home to Roy Rogers’ Disneyland - grew into one of America's most popular tourist destinations! Today it remains one of Sedgwick County's most vibrant communities with an active nightlife culture and plenty of cultural attractions available for visitors...including three professional sports teams: The Chiefs (NFL), The Wizards (Wizards basketball), and The Mavericks (Mavericks baseball).
