Leavenworth is a small town in north-central Kansas. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Leavenworth County. Leavenworth is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Leavenworth is the county seat of Johnson County. The first settler in what would become Leavenworth was John Hawkins who erected a log cabin on the east side of the current town in 1858. The town was named after General Andrew J. Leavenworth who served as commander-in-chief of Union forces during the American Civil War and also played an important role in leading Kansas into statehood. The first post office was established at Leavenworth on November 1, 1859 by Samuel Fenton with Wm Sibley as its first clerk. A railroad reached Leavenworth in 1871 and within a few years it had become one of Topeka's most important commercial areas with several stores and hotels along the tracks. By 1907, when topography changed so that farming became more prevalent and residents began to move away from downtown for economic reasons, Leavenworth's status as a commercial center diminished greatly. However, it continued to be home to many small businesses until around 2000 when big box stores replaced smaller ones as the mainstay of local commerce overall.
