The Leavenworth National Guard has been a part of the United States military since 1795. The Leavenworth National Guard is made up of men and women from all over the country who are called to serve their country in times of peace or war. The first national guard regiment was organized at Lawrence, Kansas on July 11, 1795. The regiment was composed of militia volunteers from the town of Lawrence. The 1st Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered into service on November 15, 1854 and served for two years before being disbanded. On September 25, 1861, Missourians attacked a U.S. military detachment stationed at Fort Hays near Topeka Bridge. Five soldiers were killed and thirteen wounded as a result of this attack; the Leavenworth National Guard was later mobilized to participate in this event. In 1863, the 1st Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment became known as Company K when its members were transferred to Company A (3rd Missouri) Battalion of the 2nd Kansas Infantry Regiment under command of Colonel John Smeaton Jr.. This battalion participated in various battles throughout 1862-1863 such as Battle Of Pea Ridge and Battle Of Corinth while also serving as company headquarters unit involved in many raids against Confederate forces across central Missouri during that time period. A few weeks after fighting resumed following General William Tecumseh Sherman's March To The Sea on April 12th 1865, Companies F (2nd Kansas), G (1st Illinois), K (1stKansas), L (4th Iowa) arrived in Leavenworth with orders to join other units assembling south of Manhattan Beach for an assault against Confederate General Robert Ewell's entrenched army at White Sands Junction northeast of Albuquerque NM on May 14th 1865; these companies successfully assaulted and captured White Sands Junction which resulted in Confederate capitulation that day despite heavy losses for both sides including one hundred dead and five hundred wounds sustained by both armies combined; these events are commemorated annually by Veterans Day Parade through downtown Leavenworth). After the war, Leavenworth grew slowly but steadily until it reached its current size in 1960 withthe arrival of many new residents including many aerospace engineers who work at Wichita State University and other nearby institutions of higher learning. On July 14, 1935, legislation was developed that would make the National Guard into a permanent structure within the Federal government. This legislation was known as “the” GI Bill of Rights and repealed all prior laws that limited or abolished the National Guard Bureau. Since its inception, how has the National Guard changed? Throughout its history, there have been many different issues faced by members of both uniformed and civilian components of the Guardsman community: peacekeeping efforts in Afghanistan; homeland security including response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina; counterdrugs operations; disaster relief; training new generations of Guardsmen and women; serving abroad on multiple deployments including Operation Neptune’s Spear (Yugoslavia); Operation Atlantic Resolve (Afghanistan); Global War on Terrorism (2001-2011). Today, there are over 21 million active duty members across all branches of service--National Guardsmen make up just 8 percent of this total force! With so much at stake each year – from our communities to our country – it is clear why we need their help!
