In 1881–82, William Tilton established a nearby irrigation canal which became one of the largest infrastructure investments in Kansas history and helped make Leavenworth one of the most prosperous communities in America. Today's businesses include banking, agriculture, manufacturing and retailing; all within walking distance of each other on main streets that have been drastically changed by decades of growth and progress. Levenworth has always been an important center for education – from its early days as a school district headquarters to its current role as one of the top public schools in Kiowa County and across Oklahoma State University territory.

Leavenworth is a small town in the US state of Kansas. It was first settled in 1856 and became a city in 1907. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census. Leavenworth is the county seat of Johnson County. The area now known as Leavenworth was first inhabited by the Wichita people. They were forced out of their home in what is now Dodge City by the United States Army during the Indian Wars. In 1836, General David Council established Fort Scott on this site to provide security for settlers moving into what would become Johnson County from Illinois. The fort served as a base of operations for Indian Wars waged against American settlers and also housed troops used in defending Kansas against raiding Native Americans. In 1857, after Congress passed an act authorizing cities to be formed withinJohnson County, Leavenworth was chosen as its capital and remains so today. In 1907, when Wichita Falls became an incorporated city, Leavenworth followed suit and became one of Wichita's largest mayors, serving until her death in 1951. However, despite his mayoralty record (which included improving public transportation and creating new parks), Mayor Walter Wickersham is most commonly remembered for getting Wichita Falls university started - its first college opened its doors in 1923 with only $5K donated from Wickersham himself! Today, much of downtown Leavenworth retains its early 19th century style with brick buildings dating back to pioneer times including mercantile stores built along Main Street typical of frontier towns such as these; however original homes are no longer common sight due to zoning regulations which limit building heights and other alterations allowed without permits or special approval under current law - all but condemning many structures that were once popular tourist destinations for locals and visitors alike!
