The Marine Museum of Leavenworth is one of the world's largest maritime museums and exhibits a wide variety of maritime artifacts from around the world. The museum also has a gift shop which specializes in marine memorabilia, books, and items related to seafarers. The first mention of gifts to the museum came from Captain David Denny in 1853 when he gave a donation of five cannons and two pistols to help finance repairs on the USS Constitution. In 1865, Commodore John C. Atchison donated nineteen vessels including eleven schooners, four mastboats, three tugboats, two gunboats, and one brig. In 1916, Commodore George Halsey donated twenty-one naval stores rifles to be used by the marine detachment stationed at Lawrenceburg Navy Yard. These guns were eventually melted down and formed part of the museum's collection. One of the most significant donations made by an individual was that made by Mrs. Alice Morse in 1948 when she donated thirty-six pieces ofautical memorabilia ( including several whaleboat engines) from her father's long career as a seaman with various navies around the world. This was followed by another donation in 1951 when Mrs. Esther White gave fifty-four piecesincluding a life jacket for HMS Titanicwhich are now on display inside the visitor center adjacent to model ships representing different eras of maritime exploration. Since its establishment in 1976 as an official affiliate member organization with The United States Maritime Administration (USMA), The Marine Museum of Leavenworth has become home to many important national treasures representative both Americana and international origins including: USS Constitution Museum Shipbuilders’ Association Exhibit; New Zealand whaling vessel HMNZS Agincourt; Spanish galleon Armada Ships Collection; Danish whaling ship Danish Frigate Hvitfjord; RMS Lusitania – Photographs Collection 1915-1921; Australian whaling ship ANZAC SS Napier; Dutch warship Nieuwpoort; Italian submarine Nuova Aquileia – Photographs Collection 1937-1945 A number of exhibitions have been organized throughout their history such as "Marine Artifacts: Ancient and Modern" which toured North America in 2010 followed by "Great Lakes Vessels Across Time" which toured Europe in 2014 before returning for three weeks this past summer to exhibit additional vessels located along Michigan’s Upper Peninsula between Mackinac Island and Green Bay township

Leavenworth, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 7,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Leavenworth was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1854 and named for Aethernea (a saintly water source) and Vail (the location where cattle were bought and sold). The original residents were farmers and their families who lived around a gristmill on the Arkansas River. A post office called Leavenworth was established in 1857, but no mail arrived until 1861 because transportation to Santa Fe wasn't available then. The town began to grow rapidly after wagon trains reached it from central Kansas during the early 1860s. In 1865, Congress passed an act providing for a county seat within Leavenworth Township; this led to the founding of Leavenworth County by act of Congress on November 3, 1865. The first courthouse was built in 1868 on Main Street near Second Avenue. During World War II, Leavenworth became an important munitions manufacturing center due to its location just outside Wichita proper on Interstate 70 between Topeka and Manhattan Beach south of Topeka Airport. Many factories closed after Japan's surrender in 1945, but many remain today as cultural icons such as Midland Mills No 2 & 3 and Mexico City Mill Complex LLC.. In recent years, Leavenworth has seen development with several new businesses opening up including a pizza restaurant called Papa John’s Pizza & More (now Alex’s Pizza), a bar/grill called Capital Grille that specialises in corn dogs and buffalo chicken wraps, as well as two new housing developments - Legacy Village at Gateway Drive off I-70 east of downtown Wichita and Renaissance Place off Keystone Boulevard north of downtown Wichita - all designed for young professionals or families looking for urban living without all the noise or traffic typical elsewhere in Wichita suburbs like Eagle Plaza or Lincoln Square
