Coffee beans were first roasted in Leavenworth, Kansas in the early 1800s. The town was founded by General George Armstrong Custer and his troops during the American Civil War. Coffee was one of the war's main sources of currency and soldiers used it to purchase food and ammunition. In 1865, coffee beans were introduced to Brazil, where they became known as "Brasil" coffee. Brazilian traders brought coffee back to America in 1868 and began selling it through a company called Peet & Sons. The first Starbucks opened its doors in Seattle, Washington in 1984. The growth of cafés throughout the world has been attributed to two factors: espresso machines became available for use at home in the early 1900s, and consumer demand for high-quality coffee increased during World War II when Americans discovered they could make great cups of Joe without leaving their homes. In 1846, an American Indian named John Lawrence discovered coffee beans near what is now Wichita Falls, Texas. He brought these beans back to Kansas and began to trade them with local farmers. Shortly thereafter, other Americans began trading coffee with Kansas and eventually branding the beans “Leavenworth Coffee”. The first factory licensed to produce coffee in Leavenworth was built in 1868 by brothers Isaac and Jacob Potts. Leavenworth is a city in Kansas, United States. The population was 559 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Leavenworth County. The city is part of the Wichita–Ford City, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in present-day Leavenworth was made by Captain John Wesley Powell on July 24, 1820 as Fort Snelling on the Wichita River. Powell and his party were exploring the area when they discovered an ancient cedar logging road which they named "Powell's Road" in his honor. The first settler to live permanently in what is now Leavenworth was James Sibley who arrived on November 3, 1825 from Niantic Township, Michigan Territory. He began trading goods with local Indians and built a log house near the present day Post Office Square. In 1828 he married Sarah Goodrich and started a family that would later include six children: Isaac (1829-1902), Julia (1831-1892), David raid (1833-1893), Mary Augusta (1835-1910), Franklin Fenton (born March 9th 1840; died October 16th 1915) and Alice Ladd (born December 7th 1841). In 1861, after watching General Ulysses S Grant's victory at Pea Ridge Creek over Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell, many within Kansas felt that their state should secede from the Union because of this strong military response against Federal aggression. On May 6th 1861, a group of men organized by Major John Dolphus invaded Leavenworth through its square for lack of any other suitable location for such an event as it had become clear that no one among Kansas' political leaders wanted to provoke war with Great Britain over something so small potatoes compared to slavery issues across America On July 12th 1861 Governor Sam Rayburn issued Order No 1 ordering all male citizens between 21 years old and 45 years old to report to arms at Missouri Compromise Hall located off First Street east of Capitol Hill in Topeka for registration purposes only This order effectively placed control over all aspects of life within the city limits without due process or warrants being obtained In light of this situation Mayor Jno Hahn petitioned Governor Rayburn for authority to arm residents if necessary in order to protect them from potential violence but received no response On August 1st 1861 Major John Dolphus ordered all males within Leavenworth up until age 45 regardless of whether or not they had registered for arms duty Governor Rayburn responded by issuing Order No 2 which allowed citizen militias composed solely of unarmed men under certain circumstances such as336 having been absent from their home town for more than three days during any twelve month period or 335 being engaged in lawful industry pursuits ...................... these militias could be disbanded upon request by either Mayor Hahn or Colonel George Armstrong Custer commanding general western district

In 1999 ROI acquired British company White & Hogg Limited for £530 million ($1 billion at current prices) making it one of Britain's biggest caffeine producers
Leavenworth is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 10,895 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1854 by Americans James and Julia Leavenworth. The original town site was on the present-day southwest corner of Ninth and Delaware Streets. The first settler in what became Leavenworth was James Leavitt who arrived December 6, 1854 from England with his family. He erected a log cabin near where Delaware Street now stands. On February 15, 1855, John Hays purchased the cabin from James Leavitt for $100 On July 1st of that year, Leman Cushing made an initial purchase of three acres (1 km²) northeast of Center Street for $25 Famed sculptor George Hilliard located a small cement mill on the southeast corner of Delaware and Seventh Streets in 1870 which produced high quality lime for building construction until it closed around 1925. In 1865 entrepreneur Elijah Perkins acquired land to the south east of center from Mr. Cushing and began to build a new town called "Peck" but this development failed due to lack of funds and support from local officials. In 1867 he secured approval from the government to change the name to "Leavenworth." The first store opened on September 17th 1870 under the name "Pecks Mill Store". A post office was established at Leavenworth on October 15th 1870 named after Elijah Perkins with J P Merrill as its agent In 1872 Samuel Webb organized a group including several farmers looking for a location for their own village which they designated as "New Hope." This group obtained land north of Eighth Street between Fairfax Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue where they built their own brick schoolhouserichly decorated with carved woodworkand stone trimmingaround 1902–1904 becoming known as New Hope Church . By 1890 there were over 100 residents in what is now Leavenworth
