Leavenworth is a small town in Lawrence County, Kansas, United States. At the 2010 census, the population was 5,878. The Leavenworth Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listing for its architecture and history. The first Europeans to visit what is now Leavenworth were traders from Canada in 1803. They named it "Hennepin" after Major Pierre-Etienne Hennepin who had explored the area in 1798. A post office was established at what is now Leavenworth on February 14, 1854, and soon became a center of the wagon trade between Kansas and Nebraska. In 1869, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line through Lawrence County from Topeka to Larned; this created an immediate demand for goods produced by local farmers and shopkeepers along the route. The town of Leavenworth grew up around this railroad activity; by 1870, it had a population of about 200 people. In 1871, Abraham Lincoln stopping at Leavenworth on his way to campaign in Illinois brought attention to its importance as a transportation link betweenKansas and Omaha – signifying both the growing wealth of Kansasites and their linkage with Ulysses S Grant’s successful presidential campaigns across America. Lincoln decided that Larned would be his temporary headquarters while he campaigned in nearby Springfield; he ordered General George Meade to build him a new home there so that he could stay temporarily during his visit. This event helped make Larned one of America’s most prominent towns during Lincoln’s presidency. On July 8, 1907–the day after American entry into World War I–Leavenworth joined Douglas County as part of Jay County when that county was split off from Douglas County due to its annexation by Wichita Falls following World War I. A post Office was established at present-day Leavenworth on November 1, 1907; within two years it had become one of America’s leading trading centers for agricultural products including cottonseed oil (from Texas), cornmeal (from Illinois), flour (from Pennsylvania), cheese (from New Jersey), applesauce (from Ohio) and other items necessary for war production such as munitions brass plating (for artillery). During World War II much military hardware was produced here including tanks and planes manufactured by Ford Motor Company which were shipped downrange to Wichita Falls where they were assembled into battleready vehicles before deployment throughout Europe or Asia! In 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor killing thousands Americans along with many Japanese families residing in Larned—a momentous event—the entire town shuttered until liberated on September 2nd 1945 just days before Japan capitulated!

He built a cabin on what would later be called Old Wichita Road near present-day North Park Place. The first post office at Leavenworth was opened in 1870. In 1872 James Daugherty settled near present-day South Park Place and established what became known as Daugherty's Stage Stop Railway Station (the current Amtrak station). In 1875 John Waddell started an agricultural cooperative venture with other farmers near present-day topographically difficult locations such as Prairie View Cemetery and Elk Hills Cemetery which still operate today as part of Weiser Farms Cooperative Extension Service District No. 11 (West Branch County). This early agricultural industry would continue until World War II when most agriculture production ceased due to technology advancements that made it easier for farmers to produce food without having to till ground soil or use pesticides or herbicides
