The first army gift in Leavenworth was given to the Mexican War veteran, José Antonio Castañeda on October 8, 1846. Castañeda had served in the Mexican Army and was honorably discharged from service on October 3, 1846. He immigrated to Kansas and worked as a contractor for various farmers in the area before his move to Leavenworth.Castañeda donated $500 towards the purchase of an artillery piece for the Kansas Militia, which was delivered by wagon to Leavenworth on October 15, 1847. The cannon was christened "José Antonio Castañeda" after its donor. In 1850, another army veteran donated $1,000 towards the purchase of a rifle battery for the Kansas Militia. The donation was accepted and construction began on November 1st of that year at what is now known as Fort Riley Military Park. The batteries were named "Emmett J. Curtis" and "John Smedley". Construction stopped due to financial difficulties shortly afterwards but resumed in 1865 when funds became available once again. The guns were finally delivered on May 14th of that year and christened "George Armstrong Custer" after their donor General George Armstrong Custer.. After World War II ended in 1945, many veterans returned home from Europe with new found appreciation of America's military history and culture. As a result of this interest, donations started flowing back into Leavenworth specifically towards army gifts - even though there wasn't always much practical use for such items once they arrived back home (e.g., postcards).Army gifts have continued to be popular ever since - most notably during Memorial Day Weekend each year when citizens around town come together to give away small Army gifts like candy or t-shirts

Leavenworth is a town in Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Ajax, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Leavenworth were French immigrants who arrived in 1825. They named their new settlement "Aurignac" after Louis Aurignac, the Duke of Bouillon and one of France's most famous generals during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The original village consisted of just a few houses. The French built a fort here in 1827 to protect their interests in this area from Indians who had been raiding nearby settlements for supplies and captives. In 1868, Leavenworth became the county seat of Leavenworth County when it was moved from Pawnee City. At that time there were only four towns in Leavenworth County: Aurignac, Beattyville, Garden City, and Kimballtown. In 1870, much growth took place within the limits of present-day Leavenworth as a result of railroad construction which connected Kansas City with Wichita and otherAdditional points northward. By 1880 there were over 1,000 residents living in what would become developed into what is now known as downtown Leavenworth; businessmens and women mostly worked on farming or ranching operations while men transported goods by wagon train to Twin Cities markets or stores near Wichita or Topeka.. In 1902 an act was passed providing for municipal incorporation of all towns within Levenworth County; this created what is now known as DowntownLeavenworth which includes all but one block east of Main Street between First Avenue and 12th Street NW.; these lands constituted about 60%of present-day DowntownLeavenowderthedevelopment including more than half of present-day Central Business District (CBD).. It wasn't until 1924 whenowntownLeavenorth experienced its first tornado outbreak that began widespread damage throughout its CBD; at least 21 homes were destroyed along with 3 churches and 2 schools before it was finally cleaned up two years later.. On January 9th 1909 WNEP radio station aired an advertisement for a job opening as announcer at “Municipal Auditorium” located on Third Street SW., across from Municipal Hall; this building still stands today as the home office for many local businesses including KFMB television station.. On October 6th 1923 Hennepin Electric Railway constructed tracks through central partsof town making transportation possible for both farmers & city dwellers alike; soon after businesses began popping up all around town catering to everyone from farmers to factory workers etc.; telephone service was also available through companies like Western Union which allowed citizens everywhere easy access to information regardless of location

The modern army gift history begins in 1898 when the 1st U.S. Cavalry Regiment was organized at Fort Worth, Texas as a part of the Regular Army. On July 6, 1898, President William McKinley authorized the creation of an artillery detachment to be attached to the regular army under the command of General George Custer. This detachment became known as Battery A (1st Artillery) and served with distinction during the Spanish-American War. In 1917, battery A was redesignated battery B (2nd Artillery). In 1935, battery B was redesignated battery C (3rd Artillery). Battery C served in World War II and then served in Vietnam before being disbanded in 1972. Battery D (4th Artillery) was reactivated on October 2, 1978 and serves currently with The Arkansas National Guard.
