The Leavenworth Air Force Base is home to the Kansas Air National Guard's 414th Airlift Wing, which flies military cargo and passengers to more than 30 locations around the world. The wing also offers air show and fly-in services for the community. In 1938, the United States Congress authorized the establishment of an air force at Leavenworth. The first squadrons of P-40 Warhawk fighters were assigned to the base in 1941. The base was activated as a training ground for fighter pilots in 1942 and became a major combat aviation center during World War II. It was also from here that General Curtis LeMay Jr., who led America's strategic bombing campaign during World War II, launched his planes into battle against Japan. In 1960, when India became a republic, it acquired its own air forces, and Leavenworth AFB was renamed Indian Air Force Station (IAF). IAF operated Thunderchief helicopters until 1985 when they were transferred to US Army rotary fleet control at Fort Worth, Texas. In 1990 IAF moved its Headquarters from RAF Lakenheath to IAF station at Kolkata airport in India after splitting up with United States Air Forces Europe (USAAF EF4E/K). At this time Poppy Aviation Squadron No 4 plied its trade providing passenger charter services between Kolkata and London Heathrow Airport using Boeing 737 aircraft) Leavenworth AFB has been host numerous USAF events including Blue Angels Memorial Flight Aerobatics Demonstrations on several occasions; Warrior Games - A multi-sport event comprising physical fitness tests such as running 400 miles nonstop over sand dunes; Global Challenge Cup - A parachute jumping cup competition open to all Military branches in support of Operation Noble Eagle - U.S.-India joint operation against militants operating in Afghanistan; Aero Club Flying Show - A display of stunt flying by advanced piston-engine airplanes

In 1916, General John Pershing gave a rifle to the Commandant of the Air Service Academy at Lackland Field in Texas. The Commandant used the rifle to teach cadets how to fight for their country. In 1919, Lieutenant Colonel Raymond H. Smith gave a plane and engine to the Air Service Technical School at Maxwell Field in Alabama. The school used the plane and engine to train pilots for military service. In 1938, General Curtis LeMay gave a bomber to the Army Air Forces Technical School at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. The school used the bomber to test new airplane technologies. In 1947, General Curtis LeMay again donated a bomber to the Army Air Forces Technical School at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. The school used the bomber to test new airplane technologies for use by NATO forces during World War II. In 1949, General Hoyt Sonex donated an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet fighterjet aircraft tothe USAF's Aeronautical Research Laboratory located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. This laboratory was responsible for developing new aviation technology such as wind tunnel testing and advanced flying controls systems for airplanes.
Leavenworth is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shawnee County. Leavenworth is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River and on the west bank of the Kansas River. The first permanent settler in what is now Leavenworth was James Ladd who built a log cabin in 1834. In 1839, Samuel Dickman founded a small town called Dickmanville tothe south of Leavenworth and near present-day Wichita Falls. The towns were named for General John Custer and his cavalry unit which fought in the Indian Wars from 1876 to 1887. A post office was established at Leavenworth in 1840, and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1867, Zenas Hogue organized a wagon road from Topeka to Wichita Falls which became known as "The Hogue Trail." This wagon road linked Topeka with Dodge City and Independence on the eastern side of Kansas while The Overland Mail connected Wichita Falls with Council Grove on the western side of Kansas. By 1870, The Overland Mail had become an important transportation link betweenKansas City, Omaha, Sioux City and Denver while also providing access to eastern Nebraska through Topeka. In 1870–71, Leavenworth residents donated land to Dodge City so that that it could be developed into an obstetrician/gynecologist clinic which remains one of downtown Dodge City's most prominent landmarks today. In 1881–82 when Finley Post office opened at Leavenworth after being moved from Hutchinson by Texas Territorial Governor Sam Brownback following approval by territorial legislators Oilwell & Welsh (Dodge City) & Post Office Depot (Leavenworth). On July 1st1881 new Orleans Avenue was dedicated as Main Street within minutes after hours long lineups formed outside Post Office building including many farmers who brought their produce down Main Street for inspection by storekeepers! Today(2018), Main Street runs parallel to US Highway 64 just north of downtown DodgeCity

In 1947, when the USAF was founded, there wasn't much else that the United States had to give its citizens beyond weapons and supplies. The USAF was created as an answer to this problem, and they were determined to provide their members with anything they might need or want in order to stay alive and fighting abroad. One of their first acts as a organization was to create a gift program in order to do just that. They set out to find someone who could make them something special for those who would appreciate them most- people all over the world! From here, it was just a matter of selecting what type of gift would be best suited for each individual member of the squadron! It wasn't long before they realized that different people around the world would have different needs and wants when it came time for them to receive their new belongings. So, they decided on a system where each Squadron member could choose either an airplane or kitbash items (items which consisted mostly of parts) as their gift! This allowed everyone involved with squadron management (the officers and enlisted alike) maximum flexibility when making choices about what type of gift would be best suited for them individually! Additionally, this gave commanders great flexibility when choosing how much money they wanted/needed to spend on personal gifts for their personnel! This system continued throughout many years until 1997-1998 when things changed entirely! From then on, everything within reach for members became available through purchasing power granted by Congress through Title III OF THE AIR FORCE BILL NO 97-163GASOLINE FUNDING ACT OF 1998!!! What had once been Gifts Now Was Begun To Be A National Asset!!! In other words... EVERYTHING WAS NOW GIVEN FREE TO OUR MILITARY PERSONS BY THE CONGRESS!!!!!! And we couldn't have asked for more!!!!! From now on...gift giving within our military became easier than ever before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way back then...gift giving within our military consisted mainly Of Getting Officers lots Of Kitty Lechers But Now We Just Give Them Stuff !!!!! REALLY !!!!!!!!

Leavenworth, Kansas is a small town located in the US state of Kansas. It was founded in 1867 by John L. Leavenworth and lies on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town has a population of around 10,000 people as of 2009. Leavenworth is known for its military history and for its manufacturing exports, including munitions and clothing products. John L. Leavenworth was an American politician who served as the 23rd Governor of Kansas from 1895 to 1897 and as United States Senator fromKansas from 1907 to 1913. He was born in 1795 in New Albany, Indiana and died in 1919 at age 90 years old. He was a member of the Republican Party and served four terms in Congress before becoming governor.
Leavenworth was founded in 1859 as a small town on the banks of the Kansas River. The area now known as Leavenworth was first occupied by the Lenape Native Americans. In 1851, the United States government established Fort Leavenworth on land donated by James Buchanan, then president of the United States. The fort served as a trading post and military base until 1865, when it was abandoned due to American strategy in the American Civil War. In 1865, General John Fetterman commanding Union forces moved Camp Dodge west of Leavenworth and began erecting a new arsenal on what is now called Arsenal Street. The fortifications at this location were one of the most formidable in Kansas during the war. After Union victory over Confederate troops at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, General Fetterman ordered all remaining Confederate forces withdrawn from Kansas except for those stationed at Camp Dodge. In 1870, Fort Leavenworth was decommissioned and its materials burned; however, some remnants of the fort still stand today near present-day Pratt Center on Grand Boulevard in Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1871, Leland Stanford Jr.'s father bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) east of present-day Main Street in what is now downtown Leavenworth from Hennepin County for $1 million dollars. From this property he developed much of downtown including his famous Stanford University campus which was completed in 1896 after years of construction work begun before that date. A streetcar line ran through downtown Leavenworth between 1895 and 1903; along with streetcars running throughout Wichita Falls until 1978.]
