The Lawrence National Guard was organized on July 1, 1891. The guardsmen were Originally from the towns of Topeka and Wichita. The original unit consisted of a detachment from the Topeka Barracks and two companies from the Wichita Armory. On September 15, 1912 the guard was redesignated as Headquarters Company, 2nd Kansas Infantry Regiment. In 1917 Headquarters Company became Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Kansas Infantry Regiment and in 1922 it became 4th Kansas Infantry Regiment. The regiment was disbanded on August 30, 1945. On October 15, 1890 a group of citizens formed a committee to secure arms for the Lawrence National Guard. On December 12th Governor James Guthrie issued an act which created the Lawrence National Guard Department with authority to purchase arms at any time up to $5 per gun. Two guns were purchased within days and on December 17th additional guns were bought totaling six rifles and four shotguns. A depot was built at First Street and Dodge Avenue in downtown Lawrence for storage of weapons and munitions until they could be shipped out to Fort Riley in Topeka where they would be awaiting shipment back to Lawrence. The first duty of the new national guard department was to protect local schools during school hours when teachers did not have access to their own firearms or those provided by the school board
