Lawrence, Kansas is a city in the Midwestern United States. It was founded in 1871 by James Lawrence and is the current capital of the United States. On January 14, 1847, when most of present-day Kansas became attached to Texas, General David Crockett ceded this area to the United States on behalf of President George Washington. This area was included within Jackson County until May 11, 1861, when it became Douglas County because Territorial Governor John Geary moved from Independence to take up residence there. When Douglas County was created on May 11th 1861, it included much of what are now eastern Shawnee and western Hennepin counties as well as all or almost all of present-day Lawrence and Garden City counties. The towns that would form part of Lawrence were founded primarily along main wagon roads which connected central Kansas with nearby Nebraska and Iowa; these routes would become increasingly important for trade as railroads developed. During its early years, Lawrence experienced significant growth due in large part to its location at one end of an railroad line linking central Kansas with Nebraska and Iowa; this stimulated growth throughout much of eastern Shawnee and western Hennepin counties which would eventually be annexed into Lawrence proper. In addition, many entrepreneurs established themselves in the city during this time including James Wirtz who built one of the first breweries in America; while others such as Charles Fenton opened successful stores and restaurants throughout town. In 1907–1908 construction began on what would become one of America’s first skyscrapers – 23rd Street Bridge (now Park Avenue). At that time downtown Lawrence was home to only a few hundred residents although by 1920 it had evolved into one OF THE LARGEST AMERICAN CITIES WITH OVER 100K RENTERS!
