Lawrence was founded by Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1855 as a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. The city was named for General and President James K. Polk (1846-1925), who visited Lawrence in 1885 and designated it as his headquarters during the American Civil War. Lawrence, Kansas is a town in Lawrence County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,671 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lawrence County. Lawrence was founded in 1867 by Captain James Hays and hisKit Carson crew as a small trading post on the Arkansas River. The name of the town derives from King George III's order to General David Hunter to search for an American gold mine in what is now north-central Kansas. When Jesse James and his gang robbed the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad near present-day Lawrence on November 16, 1876, it marked the beginning of what would be known as "The Great Kansas Raid." In 1886 Mayor John Dickson proposed that Lawrence become the capital of Kansas; this proposal was approved by the legislature and made into law on February 24th. On May 8th Territorial Governor Harrison signed legislation creating Lincoln County within Lawrence County; this act formed part of California Territory when that territory was divided between Mexico and America following its admission into Confederation as the United States in 1848. On July 1st 1887 when Nebraska became a state due to its inclusion in US Congress after Douglas' victory in the Mexican–American War (1865), Lincoln County remained within Lawrence County but with no real connection to it other than occasional visits by county commissioners or officeholders from one or more adjacent counties. When Douglas won re-election as President of America against Cleveland in 1896 he announced his intention to seek reelection only from states which had voted for him over their opponent – including Nebraska which had not done so. As a result Douglas campaigned throughout western Oklahoma while Inez Moulton campaigned throughout eastern Nebraska; these dual campaigns resulted in Douglas being narrowly elected over Cleveland by just 5 percentage points nationally (the closest race ever cast). This election also demonstrated how important it was for a presidential candidate to carryOklahoma and western Texas where most Republicans voting were located while eastern Tennessee - home of Andrew Johnson - backed Cleveland narrowly. After becoming president Douglas ordered all federal funds expended inside US borders be redirected back into northern California since he felt this would provide more opportunities for business development there instead of further down south where corruption seemed rampant and economic opportunity limited

After a series of battles between settlers and the Indians, Congress decided to buy the land from the natives and give it to white people as a way to create new land grants.
