The Lawrence, Kansas Army National Guard was organized on November 15, 1903. The unit was activated on December 2nd of that year and participated in the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the Lawrence National Guard was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Division and placed under the command of Major General John P. Pershing. On July 5th, 1912, the 1st Infantry Division became part of World War I when it was mobilized for service in France. After serving in Belgium and France, the division returned to America and fought in Mexico City before being demobilized on September 28th, 1919. The 1st Infantry Division re-activated on January 14th, 1942 as part of World War II when it was mobilized for service in North Africa. After serving there until late 1943, it returned to America and joined forces with other units to fight against Japan at Pearl Harbor. The division fought at Okinawa until 1945 before being disbanded again on September 30th1945. Today’s Lawrence Army National Guard is one of the most decorated units within our military branch and its history can be traced back to 1903 when it first got its start! It has participated in many wars throughout its history including World War I & II; Operation Desert Storm; Kosovo; Afghanistan; Iraq & now Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan! Our unit has also received numerous awards such as Meritorious Service Medals (MSM), Bronze Stars (BS), Air Medals (AM) & various Special Forces commendations!
