Lansing, Kansas is a small town in southern Kansas that is home to the Lansing State University campus. The population of Lansing was 2,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shawnee County metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Lansing were Creek Indians who hunted and gathered resources near the confluence of the Verdigris and Kaverne Rivers. They constructed their rudimentary shelter from sticks and leaves over time. In 1827, three brothers, John Cappuccini, Nicholas Cappuccini, and Giovanni Battista Mancini founded what would become Lansing as a trading post on land they had acquired from General George Armstrong Custer during his successful expedition against the Sioux Nation in 1876. In 1881, when Lansing was designated as the county seat of Shawnee County by an act of Congress following its establishment as a territorial county, local citizens elected Judge Augustus Bowers to serve as their first official mayor. On July 1, 1889 Great Western Railway (GWR) began service through Lansing with four stations: one on Main Street and two on Michigan Avenue north of downtown. This made it possible for farmers to market their goods directly to consumers across town without having to go through local merchants or transportation companies. The city began rapid growth due to this new development which led to increased traffic congestion along Main Street and Michigan Avenue which caused problems for both pedestrians and motorists until streetlights were installed inWWII. Lansing was incorporated as a city on December 5, 1907 by an act of the state legislature following annexation by neighboring Shawnee County; however, it did not take full form until 1912 when Judge Augustus Bowers became Mayor again after serving out his original term as Mayor pro tempore until 1913 when he was succeeded by Wm Grosberry; thereafter until 1933 when he resigned citing ill health reasons before being replaced by Fenton McMillin effective January 1st.; thereafter until 1959 when he resigned again citing ill health reasons before being replaced by Sylvester Jaffe effective December 15th.; thereafter City Manager status has been held continuously since then with appointment subject only to gubernatorial veto
