Lansing is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. In 1907 Lansing was renamed for John W. Lansing by his widow Anna M. Lansing after he died in that year. Lansing was incorporated as a city on December 1, 1908.[1] It became an independent city again on January 1, 1959.[2] On November 3rd of that year voters approvedocating $800 million from the state budget to create the Wichita metropolitan area which included Lansing and all of Sedgwick County south of Interstate 35W including parts of Topeka and Liberal.[3][4] The entire rural area within Sedgwick County south of I-35W would become part of Wichita when it was created. This change led to a decline in population in Lansing over time but has since rebounded slightly due to new development around Wichita downtown as well as housing developments north/west of town along Farm Road 620 (recently named "John W. Lansing Boulevard") which are home to many high school students and their families who commute into Wichita every day for work or study purposes
