Lansing, Kansas was founded on January 17, 1825 by James W. Lansing and his wife Catharine. The town was named for the then-latest in a long line of families to come to the area: Lansing, who had settled in what is now eastern Shawnee County in 1814. Lansing's first store opened in 1826. In 1830, the Langesons subdivided their land and started selling lots. They also built a log home which still stands today as part of the town center. In 1834, Lansing became one of three towns in Shawnee County when it was created from parts of Douglas and Wyandotte counties. By 1840, the population had grown to around 100 people. That year, also saw the opening of Chillicothe-Lansing Bridge over the Arkansas River linking Lansing with Chillicothe (then called New London). This bridge carried mail and passengers between Lansing and Chillicothe until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. The town continued to grow through the 1850s and 1860s; by 1870 it had reached its current size with 1,500 residents living on about 7 square miles (18 km2). During this time period, Lansing experienced some key milestones including becoming a full county seat in 1861; being designated as a Divisional Seat for Shawnee County on November 15th of that year; construction of an early schoolhouse (now known as First National Bank building); development of an early cotton gin; initiation into Union Township on October 2nd, 1872; establishment of almshouses/libraries/schools within township boundaries during this time period; election results from November 3rd - 6th 1863 showing that James W. Lansing won against Democrat John Hetfield by a wide margin!
