Lansing is a city in the US state of Kansas. The population was 83,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Edmond, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1855 by Lewis Cass and named for Lansingburgh in upstate New York, where he had married his first wife. The original town platting included land for two churches and one school; the first church was built in 1857 and the second in 1860. Lansing began to grow rapidly after railways arrived in early 1869, when coal miners starting arriving to transport coal from mines near Topeka. By 1870, there were three hotels and over fifty businesses along East Main Street; Lansing had become an industrial center with mills manufacturing everything from flour to rubber boots. In 1893, Lansing became the capital of Kansas when it was moved from Wichita to serve as the state's new seat of government following the admission of Kansas into the Union as a free state. In 1907, local entrepreneur James Myer opened what would be called "The World's Largest Glass Factory" on North State Street - now known as Myer Plaza - which produced more than 1 million square feet (9300 m2) of glass products each year until its closure in 1967 due to competition from automation from abroad. In 1916, Lansing became home base for Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers; during their tenure here they completed a stadium that still stands today (now Comiskey Park).
