Junction City, Kansas is a city in the US state of Kansas. It was founded in 1854 by John W. Geary and became an incorporated town in 1907. The current mayor is Darrell L. Hill. Junction City has a population of about 50,000 people as of 2010. The city's police department was established on December 10, 1854, when the first policeman was hired to patrol the area around present-day Junction City. The department currently has six officers and patrols an area of about 145 square miles (380 km²). By 1865, the town had raised $2,500 to buy equipment for its new police force including two horses and a wagon. In 1907, residents voted to incorporation as a city with a Mayor/Council system under which each ward held one representative on an at-large basis with all citizens voting unless they resided within one of five wards created specifically for policing purposes: CentralPolice District; EasternPolice District; WesternPolice District; NorthCentral Policewoman's Association; or SouthCentral Policeman's Association . On January 1, 1910, Junction City became one of 47 cities across America that joined forces with New York City to form what would become known as The NYPD .
