The town was named for the junction of two creek beds which cross near the site of the present town. In 1880, a branch railroad was built to connect Junction City with Wichita. In 1892, Junction City became a city while Wichita remained a small rural community. In 1907, the Wichita and Topeka Railroad merged into the Missouri Pacific Railway and split Junction City off from Wichita as its new station area SW corner Main Street NE on First Avenue NE between Fourth Street NW and Fifth Street NW (now portion of Depot Square). In 1912, an electric streetlight system was installed in Junction City; this continued until 1974 when it went out due to budget cuts by then- Mayor Harry Hagee. On November 2, 1976, voters passed an act annexing portions of Douglas County to create Johnson County; Junction City became part of that county on February 3, 1977 under terms set forth in that act creating Johnson County from much larger Douglas County parcel including most of what is now eastern Kansas University Park east side west side south side north side lying along Main Street NE between Fourth Street NW and Fifth Street NW (now Depot Square). On January 1st 2020 President Donald Trump signed into law HR 6674 which created West Texas Intermediate Pipeline Access Zone withinJohnsonCounty - making JunctionCity one step closer to becoming one big oil refinery!
