During the Cold War, JCAB operated as an important launch site for USAF bombers from KC-135 Stratotankers. JCAB has been a majorstay at Junction City since its establishment. The base has seen many expansions and renovations over the years, most notably in 1969 when it became home to the 269th Tactical Missile Wing. The wing served as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which launched airstrikes against North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Since then, JCAB has undergone several name changes, including Big Sky Airport in 1992 and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in 2006. Today, JCAB is one of America's busiest military airports and remains a vital launching location for USAF bombers and fighters.
