In the year 1885, George Hutchinson and his family moved from their home in Illinois to the small town of Hutchinson, Kansas. Hutchinsons were farmers with a farmstead of just over sixty acres. The Hutchinson family had five children: Harry, Jessie, John, Meta and Alice. All but Meta were born in Illinois while Alice was born in Hutchinson. George Hutchinson started farming at the age of seventeen years old and became successful. The Hutchinsons grew corn, wheat and hay on their farmstead thatched with straw. In addition to their crops they raised chickens, pigs and horses. They also sold eggs door-to-door for two cents each. The Hutchinson family contributed a great deal to the community through volunteerism and service work within the local churches. George served as township trustee (1912-1914), school board member (1915-1920) and postmaster (1920-1925). He was also active in various civic organizations including being president of the First Presbyterian Church from 1924 until his death in 1955. In 1957, George's grandson Tom married Peggy White who was then living in Wichita Falls, Texas; they later moved to Hutchinson where Tom continued farming until he retired in 2002. Peggy is buried at Greenwood Cemetery therewith her husband Donald White who also died thereon in 2003 aged ninety six years old
