The first settler in Hutchinson was John Hutchinson and his family who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. They built a log cabin on an east-west road near present day Hutchinson northeast of the current city limits. In 1852, they were joined by two others: Wm. Ladd and Isaac Hargrave. The early settlers were hardy men who labored piecing together the rough country that would soon be home to them and their families. In 1854, Samuel Atherton sold Hutchison land to General George Armstrong Custer for $2,000 cash only - one of the largest sales ever made in that area at that time. Hutchison became known as "the depot for Indians". After Custer's victory at Little Bighorn in November 1876, most of the Indian trade stopped because there was no more cavalry available to transport goods back and forth between Fort Riley and Dixon City (now Wichita). However, some cattle still continued to be brought through Hutchison until about 1880 when all traffic came to Pottawatomie Junction on Interstate 35E north of Wichita
