Hutchinson, Kansas is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It was most recently estimated to have a population of 2,269. Hutchinson is named after James Hutchison who also founded the city of Wichita in 1871. The first people to live in what is now Hutchinson were the Kansa Indians. They lived on the east side of the river and hunted small game. In 1854, a group of settlers from Missouri came through this area and decided to settle down in what is now Hutchinson because it was close to their new home and they thought it would be an attractive place for business development. The first businesses in Hutchinson were a store and wagon stop called "The House on Top." This establishment served as both a market and social center for the local farmers until around 1870 when railroads came into being which made transportation much more efficient. By 1875, there were five businesses in town including two stores, one bank, two churches (the First Baptist Church & Second Presbyterian Church), three taverns (the Three Gables Inn & Eastern Star Tavern), four mills (the Buffalo Mills & Western Mill), one hospital (the White Hospital) and one post office (the Post Office Building). This growth led to the name change from "The Village" to "Hutchinson" by 1907 when all but one of the original businesses had been closed or converted into residences or other commercial buildings. In 1913-14, Hutchinson voted to annex part of Potter County which gave rise to that county's current name; Hutchison County-. Incidentally, this annexation occurred just as Wichita became its own city! Today there are still some rural areas within Hutchison boundaries but most residents either reside within Wichita or are employed within nearby towns such as Olathe or Garden City. According as 2010 census data only 3% of households identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino which could be due largely to limited opportunities for education outside those communities since Hispanics make up little more than 10% of overall Kane County population; however those numbers are likely higher given that bilingual services are available should any resident need help with anything Spanish-speaking related!
