The Hutchinson Infantry Regiment was organized on November 1, 1861. The regiment was mustered into the Union army on February 14, 1862. It served in the Kansas theater of operations until September 8, 1862 when it moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and then to Topeka, Kansas. On October 15, 1862 the regiment left Topeka for Santa Fe where it participated in the Battle of Santa Fe on October 17th. The regiment returned to Wichita and then to San Antonio TX before returning home on December 10th. The Hutchinson Infantry Regiment reorganized and redesignated as the 2nd Battalion (Majestic) infantry on January 1st 1863. It also fought at Pea Ridge April 6-10 1864 before returning home August 1865.

In 1861, during American Civil War (1861-1865), Hutchisons brought their cattle to market in Cairo, Illinois and decided to move to Wichita so they could get more involved with their community's affairs. However, they soon realized that they needed someone to cowrite The Wichita Herald which served as their town's newspaper until 1915 when it was bought by the current owner James Mazonian Sr., who also founded KA Broadcasting Corporation which owns most major radio stations across Wichita including KSAT 1260 AM/FM and KASY 1090 AM/FM

In 1859, Andrew Hutchinson was elected as the first Mayor of Wichita. In 1865, he was re-elected as Mayor and served until 1868. From 1868 to 1870, he served as a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He died in office on December 1, 1870, and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Wichita.
