Hays died and is buried in nearby Saint Joseph Cemetery with his wife Eliza and their children Sarah (1863-1940), George (1865-1937) and Alice (1868-1960). The city's population grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the main stagecoach route between Kansas City and Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; Haysville became an important railroad center. By 1912, Haysville had become one of the most populous towns in Kansas City County. However, economic development declined following WORLD WAR I and II; however, it has regained some of its former importance as a manufacturing center over recent decades.
