Hays, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 3,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first coffee beans were grown here in 1895 by John Atchison and his family. Hays Post Office was established in 1903. In 1907, the first commercial coffee crop was grown here and it became known as "the best bean town in America". By 1916, Hays had become a "coffee capital of the world" due to its high quality beans and resulting demand for them from all over the globe. In 1925, Harry Bernhardt founded Bernhardt Coffee Company in Hays with help from his father-in-law Sam Bernhardt. The company became one of the most successful small businesses in Wichita during that time period and continues to operate today as an independently owned business with three locations: one located in downtown Wichita; one on Kossuth Road near University Park; and one on Delaware Avenue just outside of Hays proper boundaries. During World War II, various effort were made by local farmers to grow crops for war production such as corn and cotton which led to increased demand for coffee beans from consumers all over Europe (due to rationing) but also created new opportunities for farmers around Sedgwick County to sell their products directly to consumers rather than through larger grocery stores or retail outlets. This led to a generational change within many families who’d been growing coffee since before WWI/1910s when their fathers/grandfathers did so without any modern technology or machinery…..thus giving rise to what has come be known as “old school” coffee brewing techniques – hand pressing whole beans using unglazed pottery vessels called “pods” – until recently still favored by many traditional roasters throughout North America even where automated machines are now prevalent….

Hays, who served as Commandant of the Marine Corps during World War I and later became an important leader within Republican Party politics. The town's primary industries have been agriculture and ranching since before WWI; however, oil production began to increase in the early 20th century and has continued to grow ever since. Oil exploration and production are now one of the most important economic sectors in Hays, with many companies headquartered here. Oil production at Hays' Swope Field began on December 12, 1906 when two Pennsylvania companies - Pennsylvania Natural Gas Company (PNG) and Houston & Texas Pipe Line Company - merged to form Occidental Petroleum Corporation. In 1911, Occidental merged with American Petroleum Company to become Texaco Corporation which then merged with Mobil Oil Corporation to become ExxonMobil Corporation in 1956. Today, there are over twenty thousand people working at oil refineries or offshore platforms across America's Gulf Coast region; this number is expected to continue growing as new discoveries are made throughout North America as well as internationally. While some aspects of life have changed dramatically due to oil production - such as increased prices for gasoline and food - other aspects of life remain much the same including small towns located along major highways that offer access to shopping malls containing more than three-dozen stores apiece!
