Gourmet Coffee History in Hays, Kansas began with the first coffee beans being roasted and ground in this town in 1887. The town of Hays was named for General George S. Hays who helped establish the Kansas Geological Survey. The first store in town was called the Barnes & Noble, which operated from 1892 to 1897. In 1903, a grocery store, The Gilded Cage, opened its doors and became one of the leading gourmet coffee retailers of its time. In 1915, Mr. Charles Fenton founded Koffee Klatch which became one of the largest coffee retailers in America at that time. Koffee Klatch continues to operate as an independently owned business today with over two million square feet of retail space across seven states including Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky! In 1980s and 1990s, Gourmet Coffee Company (GCC) was one of the most popular roasters in America due to their unique flavor profiles. In 2003 GCC merged with another large roaster - Peet's - creating what is now Peet's Coffee USA Incorporated! Today there are multiple brands under one roof including Peet's Coffee Reserve®, Peet's Licensed Blend®, Keurig® Single Serve Roasters®, ICC (International Cup Committee) Blends™ and more!

The first gourmet coffee shop in Hays, Kansas was opened by entrepreneur, Harry Fenton in the early 1940s. The store sold only espresso and coffee beans. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Harry's son-in-law, Don Green, started importing Italian roasted coffee from Rome. This led to the growth of gourmet coffee around town. By the mid-1950s, Don had opened two more stores in Hays - one at 142 Main Street and one at 4th Avenue South. By 1960, there were six Gourmet Coffee Stores across Kansas City metropolitan area!

Hays, Kansas is a small town in southern Kansas that is known for its cornproducts. The area was first settled by the Hays family in 1871. The community quickly became popular for its fertile land and numerous breweries that produced local beers. Today, Hays remains a busy community with many businesses and services available to residents.

Coffee has been around for centuries, and it is no secret that coffee beans are some of the oldest plants in the world. Coffee was first brewed for trade purposes in Sumer about 3000 BC. In many ways, coffee has been a part of human life throughout history. The Egyptians drank it as anodyne to ease pain from various ailments, and Rome used ground coffee to make their morning espresso. There were even small breweries established in medieval Europe that produced specialty coffee called “bridge ale” because its taste was similar to that of beer but stronger (up to 8% alcohol by volume). Coffee production only really began to take off during the 20th century when farmers started growing more beans and selling them through local markets. Today, there are over 100 different types of coffees available on the market, and each one has its own unique flavor and aroma. Some of our favorites include Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Colombian Supremo, Arabica bean blends, French Roast Roasts, Papua New Guinea Tomu Haiku Moka Coffees, Brazilian Cascais Coffee, Kenyan Kamba Mocha) There have been many different methods used to roast coffee beans - this range from simple roasting with direct exposure to air or flame (which produces a darker bean), as well as more complex methods such as whole bean fermentation or wet/dry roasting which produces a higher quality cup of coffee. The most popular method now is decaffeination- where water is added slowly toactivate the caffeine so that it can be enjoyed by those who enjoy light cups of java without all the extras. Today's gourmet coffee lovers can indulge in a wide variety of flavors thanks to all the new technology being developed in the industry today- including CO2 extraction methods which allow fuji taisha beans (a type of slow roasted bean)to reach their unique flavor profile while still retaining some bitterness; cold pressing which preserves natural oils and aromas; and Nespresso® machines which allow users tinker with numerous flavors and settings before finally enjoying a delicious cup of Joe!

There is a long and varied coffee history that stretches back to the early Italian grinding method known as corteccia. In the 16th century, Spanish traders discovered Java and began importing coffee beans from that region. Coffee cultivation slowly spread throughout Indonesia and into South Asia, where it was used for religious tea. The first European to taste real espresso in Rome was Giovanni Battista del Monte in 1592. In 1790, Swiss chemist Johann Georg Becher developed a way to improve the quality of coffee by using a process called roasting. This gave coffee its distinctive flavor profile and helped make it more popular in Europe than ever before. Over time, different methods of roasting have been developed and variations on espresso (such as French press) have become popular all over the world.

Hays wasn't always the thriving agricultural hub it is today. The town was founded by John Hays, a surveyor and member of the Kansas House of Representatives in 1854. At first, Hays only built roads and houses for himself and his family, but over time he became an influential figure in the community. In 1865, Hays donated land to the Kansas State School District, which would become K-State. This donation allowed K-State to grow rapidly and create many new opportunities for students and faculty. Today, Hays is home to many famous schools including K-State's largest student body with over 30,000 students enrolled in Fall 2016 - more than any other university in Kansas. John Hays' legacy is also deeply ingrained into the fabric of Kansas culture. His contributions to society continue to be felt today through such things as agriculture and education. He has been memorialized throughoutKansas history as both a patriot who fought for democracy at home and an advocate for innovation during America's early days.

Hays was founded in 1859 by the brothers Isaac and Augustus Hays. The town was named after General Stephen A. Hays, who had died in 1848. The town became a railroad center during the late 1800s and early 1900s, with many businesses located in the downtown area. By 1920, Hays had a population of 2,500 people. In 1925, the city of Lawrence merged with Hays to form one municipality.
