Hays, Kansas is a small town in southern Kansas. The population was 784 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town began as a post office in 1867. Hays was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in a skirmish near the town in 1876. In 1907, the community elected its first mayor, A. L. Hays. Hays has had many changes over the years including becoming an agricultural center during World War II and then declining with few new businesses opening up in recent decades. Hays was a town in and around Lawrence, Kansas, United States. The town was founded in 1872 by John Hays and his brother George Hays. It grew rapidly due to its location on the Santa Fe Trail and its access to water resources. The townsite was surveyed in 1873 by Edward S. Smith and named for General Curtis Hays, commander of the Mexican army who had helped lead the Ulysses S. Grant's Expedition against Mexico City in 1863. The first post office opened in 1874; it was called "Aurora." In 1875, the name change to "Hays" after John Hays' home county of York County, Pennsylvania. The population of Hays peaked at 697 in 1880 but declined during the early 19th century because of factors such as increased travel to nearby Lawrence and Wichita Falls, Texas; lack of industry; and decline in trade due to new transportation systems such as steamboats and railroad cars. In 1907, following World War I,[1] most of downtown Lawrence were destroyed by a fire that raged for several days. The town's remaining buildings were replaced with tanks or concreteormanufacturing plants during the 1920s through 1940s when Lawrence exploded into prosperity as an agricultural centerdue largely to oil discoveries offshore.[2] Albert Einstein attended one high school reunion while living in neighboring Topeka before he entered college at Columbia University[3][4] In 1988, parts of downtown Lawrence were designated a National Historic Landmark along with nearby Old Main (1836) within the University of Kansas campus
