In recent decades however, Great Bend has seen increasing development as a result of its proximity to Wichita andKansas City as well as annexation by those cities as part of their larger metropolitan areas

Great Bend was founded in 1854 by John W. Bonnett and James A. Logan as a watering place for cattle on the Santa Fe Trail. By 1907, Great Bend had a population of 1,500 people and contained ten churches, three schools, two hotels, a grocery store, and a bank. In 1917, Great Bend was renamed Bentonville after General George H. Benton who served as United States Minister to Mexico during World War I. The post-war boom slowed down in the 1920s but resumed in the 1930s when oil production increased in the area. In 1938, Great Bend became Kansas City's first city Limits
