Great Bend is a census-designated place in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,437 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first people to live in Great Bend were the Pawnees and other Plains Indians who traveled down from Washington State for trade with the Comanche. In 1859, General James Hennepin's army invaded Kansas and discovered this area of country. The town was founded by Captain John Smedley on April 3, 1859 as "Pine Bluff." On July 8, 1860, a land grant of 640 acres (248 hectares) was given to Colonel George Armstrong Custer by President James Buchanan as part of his expedition into Indian Territory in order to subdue Dakota Sioux and their allies. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on I-435 just west of Wichita Falls; it became an important transportation hub for goods moving between Wichita Falls and Fort Worth and also acted as a supply depot for Army units operating in Indian Territory during the Civil War. By 1870, Great Bend had a population over 1,000 people and had built several churches and schools including one which still stands today; it became known as "The Metropolis" because of its importance in government services. In 1881 Great Bend organized as a city under the new Wichita Municipal Act which granted city status to towns that had populations over 500 residents within five years of incorporation or that submitted plans for annexation by Wichita City. As Great Bend grew more popular among citizens and businesses alike, annexed areas began to form outside of Great Bend such as portions of Topeka (1892), Overland Park (1906), and Shawnee Heights (1920). During World War II Great Bend played an important role in providing munitions storage facilities along I-435 near present day Midway Airport while other areas such as Topeka developed into major manufacturing centers such as Boeing Airplane Assembly Plant near Midway Airport while Shawnee Heights became home to Kansas State University after being deeded by the state in 1922. After World War II ended there were few changes until the early 21st century when many small businesses closed or merged into larger ones while residential development continued throughout much of downtown core with single family homes dominatingresidential areas until recently with some large mixed use buildings popping up around arterial streets like First Street NE which has seen recent hotel development nearby

Great Bend was the first town in what is now Kansas. The name “Great Bend” was given to it by General James K. Polk because of the bend in the River Niobrara which forms its border. The town was founded by a group of farmers and traders who sailed down the Niobrara river from Illinois on their way to wagon trains traveling through Mexico. They named their new settlement after Great Bend, a bend in the Missouri river where they had seen Indian camps. In 1854, Great Bend became an incorporated village and during that year, Kansas became a state. The town continued to grow as settlers came to live there and by 1870, it had become an independent city with a population of over 200 people. By 1900, Great Bend had reached its current size with a population of over 3,000 people. It has been continuously growing since then and is still one of the most important cities in Kansas today.
In 1851, the first post office in Great Bend was established. In 1861, the first railroad reached Great Bend and in 1865, the first store opened in Great Bend. The population of Great Bend grew rapidly from its early days until World War II when it decreased significantly due to the war. However, since the war has increased growth rates in Great Bend. There are currently over 100 businesses operating within the city limits of Great Bend and many more are being planned or completed. Additionally, great bend is home to both an FAA airfield (Great Bend Municipal Airport) and a NASA Ames Research Center which employs over 1,000 people.
