Great Bend, Kansas is a small town in the western United States. The population was 5,592 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The name comes from Great Bend Creek, which flows through the town. Great Bend is located on the confluence of two rivers: the Wichita River and Big Blue River. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Great Bend has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on account of its high humidity levels. In 1861, when Kansas became a state ,the post office continued being called Union City but changed its name to Great Bend shortly thereafter due to popular demand .
