The Great Bend Air Force Base is home to the Kansas Air National Guard's 318th Wing. The wing has a long and proud history of deploying air force gifts to local communities across the state. In 1994, the 318th Wing bestowed the first ever military gift to Great Bend, KS when it delivered a C-130 Hercules cargo plane as part of Operation Christmas Tree. In 2002, the wing bestowed another military gift when it donated an F-15 Eagle fighter jet to Great Bend Municipal Airport. Today, the 318th Wing continues its tradition of giving back by delivering gifts such as helicopters and airplanes to local schools and businesses throughout Kansas. In 2017, for example, the wing donated two Chinook helicopters to Great Bend Elementary School in memory of former KAFB news anchor Shawnee Kilpatrick. This year marks yet another anniversary for the 316th Fighter Squadron at Great Bend AFB - on December 5th, 2018, The squadron gifted two F-15C Eagles to Wichita Community College in honor of Airmen from KC-135 Stratotanker flights over Wichita during Operation Christmas Tree that year.

Great Bend is a town in Buchanan County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1881 and named after Great Bend Creek. It was renamed Great Bend in 1907. The first post office in Great Bend was established on October 14, 1881. The present civic building was built in 1901 and is the only one remaining from that time. In 1907, the name of the town changed to Benton to honor General John A. Benton of Missouri who had come to Kansas as part of the Union army during the American Civil War and fought against Confederate forces there. The community has had a number of businesses open over the years including a bank (1894), gas station (1906), grocery store (1910), carpenter shop (1912), meat market (1920s-30s) and more recently an RV dealership (2009).
